Volume control help

So i just bought a brand new laptop, and the only way to adjust its volume is with Fn + f5/f6. Ok i wasnt thrilled about no volume buttons but i could live with it. Then when i started adjusting the volume with the Fn key no volume meter show up on the screen. I was wondering if theres a way to enable a volume meter, or something to show me what the volume is when i turn it up or down or mute it. thanks.

p.s. im on vista home premium 64 bit if that helps at all.

Click on the speaker icon in the systray and adjust it there with the mouse. Set it in the middle, then use the Fn keys to set it to medium level, then leave the Fn keys alone and do your adjusting with the software.

I tend to avoid vista like the plague, but I can tell you that XP has a ckeck-box - "Place volume icon in the taskbar" under "Sounds and Audio Devices" in "Control Panel". If you dont see the speaker icon next to the clock, you may want to look for this in your control panel. It's not always checked by default( at least in XP)

the speaker icon is next to the clock on the task bar. what my problem is, is it doesnt show me how much the volume increases when i increase the volume UNLESS i go to that icon. I just want some on screen pop up to show me what volume level im at.

No way that's going to happen without software from the laptop manufacturer.
