greedo Transfuring everything from an old to a new!

I will be replacing a 2002 Dell Dimension 2400 with a new Dell Vostro 220!
How do I get everything from the 7 year old computer to the new one?

1. Burn copies of your data to cd or dvd
2. Save to a flash drive.
3. Save to an external drive
3a. Install your IDE drive in an external enclosure like this

If it's a SATA drive

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817362003

Then you can save some cash and use your old drive as storage.

4. Connect the two with a crossover cable and network them together, then transfer files.
5. *If* your new computer will support your old IDE drive, you could install the old drive as a secondary drive.

However you cannot transfer programs from one computer to another. Any programs that you want to keep will have to be installed on the new computer.

Since the premiere members forum is not for tech support, it was moved to the general software forum.

Instead of buying an enclosure, this adapter will handle any kind of hard drive:

I didn't bring up the adapter because if the poster wanted to reuse the drive, the enclosure would give some protection to the drive. Particularly if their desk is anything like mine. All cluttered up. If they don't want to keep it, then I agree, it's a cheaper way than the enclosure.
