pc freezing up

My pc has started freezing at random moments. Before it used to be whenever I was playing a high spec game like Pro Evo 2010 or Operation Flashpoint. Now it seems to do it at random times and, sometimes, it freezes when booting up so I have to constantly turn it off and on just to get it to start up. I’ve tried changing the ram sticks so that they’re both 1gb sticks from the same manufacturer, I’ve changed the graphics card (both 1gb cards), the small lithium battery on the motherboard and even turned off hardware acceleration. I’ve also tried running registry repair software and run complete spyware remover and AVG sweeps. None of this seems to have made any difference. I’m pretty sure its a software problem but can’t work out what. Help!

A PC that freezes when booting points to hardware not software but we can't tell one way or another till we know what we're dealing with.
Post your specs (Or make and model if it's an OEM machine, that's Dell. etc. . ) and your operating system.

Why are you sure it's software?
