Outlook Express 6

Hi, the Administative Assistant's computer is having problems with attachments. She has gotten emails with them and wanted to print from them. The most recent is a pdf. It says there is no program associated with it, but I checked under Program Associations in the Folder Options under the Control Panel (XP) and they are associated fine there. I went back to Outlook Express and it sees it as "Unknown file type" even though the extension is PDF. Is this a security protection, or what is going on? How do I fix it? Thanks.

If you save the attachment to the desktop - or any where on the pc - can you then open it?

Check Tools > Options > Security tab
Is there a checkmark beside: Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus?

Try unchecking it and seeing if you can open the attachment.

Yes, I never mentioned in my post that it will open if saved (I thought to check right after making the first post. I will have to check out the rest when I am there tomorrow.

I had wondered about security settings yesterday before I posted, but didn't see it in the little time I had on the computer. I did try to fix that today and it didn't help. It still doesn't see it as any specific type of file, but will open when saved.

Thanks, I have read those, but haven't tried them yet. When I get some time I might just uninstall and reinstall Acrobat first and see if that solves it. If not, I might try the thing with open that was mentioned. Will post results here.

Come to think of it, she might have the same issue with Power Point. I do know she has had problems opening them, and I gave her options over the phone, but whe was unable to get it to work. I am not sure if that was because it was newer Power Point than the version she had on her computer, if she was doing it wrong, or the problem that exists with Acrobat. Maybe I could email a dummy powerpoint from her computer (assuming she even has it on there :-) )and email it to herself.
