I tunes help
Ok thought I posted this before but guess I didn't. When Itunes updated two times ago I lost my libraries and play lists. Every post I read on how to fix it makes no sense, if you could give me directions a 3 year old could understand would appreciate it. Is there a better program out there I can use to manage my itunes music and my ipod? Any help appreciated.

What operating system do you have ?
Are you running any automatic file backup/organizing software that updated around the time your libraries and play lists got whacked ? If you have an iPod Classic you may, possibly, be able to use Songbird for the music but if you're having a problem following library repair instructions for iTunes that will give you nightmares. Read through this article : http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/art...tunes-library/ It has a good overview of how/why iTunes libraries work and it will make following any instructions much easier when you have some idea of why you're being given those instructions.

![]() You know what the Touch looks like, right? And you've been using it? If you have an 8GB Touch, 1st gen not the recent ones, did this start with the firmware update ? Last edited by pam123; 02-20-2010 at 08:08 AM. |

OK. So this is for your iPod and for your iTunes account or are you and your son sharing an account and a library ?

stumbling forward
Ok I plugged my son's old ipod (2 gigs) and something came up it wasn't synched to this computer I synched it it transfered the purchased songs in to the purchased part of I tunes. I had set up one account with play lists for me, my son and my wife, those are the missing library files (and playlists) I am after.

OK.
Your first necessity is to back up the iTunes Media folder (It's what contains the music, videos, etc. that you play list and library files draw on.) it's in the iTunes folder which is in your My Music (or just Music) folder. You can always recreate the play lists but you can not re-download the music if you lose it. Use a usb hard drive for this and copy the entire folder to it. Don't do anything else until you've done that. Now download and save a copy of iTunes : http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ If you haven't had a chance to read the article I linked to yet don't do anything else until you have. Just a quick question, the computer in your signature is the one with iTunes on it ? |

Still more information
Yes that is the computer I tunes is on. It replaced the old system whoos motherboard ate itself (long story) while the motherboard was consuming itself and since I had very little hard drive space I had bought an exernal usb drive and moved my itunes library there. Got the new one and copied the librabry back from the external to the hard drive in the computer since it was so big. Thank you for your patience in walking me through this I appreciate it. I am reading through the article you linked.

When you're done reading I have a few questions.
1. What security software are you running? 2. Were those only smart play lists that disappeared ? 3. The iPod Touch and the older iPod sync with iTunes but yours doesn't ? 4. What has happened when you tried re-installing iTunes previously (If you did) ? 5. Where you able to create play list then and at what point did they disappear ? 6. After you back up your music what happens when you open, or try to, the other files in iTunes? |
