How to copy DVD's to computer and watch them on computer

I would like to copy and store DVD's that I have to my computer and then be able to watch them when I want to from my computer like I do with CD's. Also, I was wondering if there was video website that you would recommend for video help similar to PCMECH.

Thanks Pam for your reply. I read through the pcmech link that you posted on and from reading it, it is my understanding that people want to make backup dvd's. I'm not looking to make backup up dvd's. I just want to store or build a library on my computer and then play the movies when I want to. I am not looking to shrink the movie which may effect the quality of the movie.

I also read a little from the myce.com website, though I have more reading there to do. This does not sound as simple as coping CD's into itunes, building a music library, and then just playing them.

I am running windows 7 home premium. Will this work or do I need additional software? Also, I am not looking to build a pvr and I thought that is what media center was for. I guess there is a lot more for me to learn about this and at this point I am a little confused. Thanks again for your help.

I'm doing this strictly off the top of my head and using logic.

Create a folder for each DVD. Using Windows Explorer, copy the whole file structure from each DVD into the appropriate folder.

Install DVD playing software such as Power DVD. To play a DVD with Power DVD, open it, hit Ctrl+O, select Open DVD file on hard disk, and browse to the folder. Othe DVD player software will work in a similar fashion.

To add to what glc told you about creating folders ...

Actually you just add Handbrake to make your desire real : http://handbrake.fr/index.php
The Apple Universal Pre-set will give you archive quality rips that you can then play from iTunes and on your Ipod Phone/Touch or, bonus points

The new "Normal" preset should work perfectly fine on any device that supports http://www.pcmech.com/forum/images/s...in.gifstandard Main Profile H.264 with AAC-LC audio in an MP4 file, which the PS3 and 360 ostensibly do.
Translation, it should paly back in Windows Media Player, now that Win7 comes with its own DVD player, as well iTunes (If you want it on your iPod just use 'Convert for iPod' in iTunes.).

By the way, it's free.

Should you have something special in mind you can create your own default in Handbrake and have everything exactly as you want.

edit : You use the same steps to create files on your hard drive, just skip the burning.

Thanks glc and Pam. I have nothing special in mind, nor do I plan on putting them on an ipod as I am probably one of the few people left that doesn't even own an ipod.

In that case 'Normal' will work just fine for you.

Im using Pavtube DVD Ripper which can rip, copy and convert dvds to other popular video formats. I love its fast conversion speed and almost original quality of output file. i found it in google and it listed in the first page.
