DVD burn speed

I'm using Memorex DVD-R blank discs. They show 16x. Should I burn at this speed? I've tried the slower speeds and sometimes the playback just isn't so hot. Movies usually start out ok but before too long the pausing and starting again kick in. Very irritating. Does the burn speed have anything to do with this? Thanks alot.

Generally slower speeds do better when burning.

You might want to try some Verbatim blank DVDs.

One thing you definately want to do is set your burning software to max 4300kb. This will prevent the disk from being written to the very outer edge and you will have much better stability when playing back. I have found that people who have stutter problems can usually resolve them by doing this.

Memorex can be bad news. I concur with the Verbatim suggestion.

Also try taking your burn speed off of auto and manually set a speed much less than 16x

A slower burn speed will offer a more stable burn. If the disc says 16x then if you want to be sure of a good burn; burn at no more than half speed (8x). You will get a lot less coasters doing this.

If you upgrade your material (Memorex to Verbatim) you will get less coasters at full speed. Memorex used to make a decent and inexpensive tape for recording, they don't do this with thier discs. Memorex is only good for inexpensive discs. Might as as well buy the no name brand or some 3rd party knock off label. When I don't have Verbatim, Ill use an HP disc. HP makes a decent ligfhtscribe DVD disc. Sony dvds and cds are top notch, but they don't have a lightscribe version-so I hardly ever buy then for me.

What Rick Hall said makes sense, but I've never had a problem using the full disc. With a better product I doubt you'll need to do this.

If you're making dvds for full feature films try different compression and or burning software.

If you're burning home movies, be sure to check the source video. On a camcorder the pause button is usually pretty easy to hit a few times.

I prefer automatic for a burn speed. Automatic will start at a slow burn and work up to full speed. It will then throttle down near the end of the burn. This gives your burn a good solid start and finish. Setting your burn speed to manual is the fastest way to get it done-and if using good discs you will most likely not 'see' much difference.
