Type over text, stop, stop stop!!!

Hi

This is a problem that I have run into for years.
I'm finally asking for help!

This can happen in pretty much any program that you type into.
Including when I'm typing into Word, Text Aloud, or my browser as I am now.

I hit some key by accident or something and every thing I try and type replaces the text ahead of it. So if I go back and want to make a correction I have to type the whole sentence over again.

I don't know how to stop it doing this when it happens.
It doesn't seem to be program dependent, it must be a function of Windows in general. The only way I have been able to get it to stop is to exit and restart the thing I'm working on.

Does anyone know how to get out of this mode once you are in it?

Mike

if I understand you correctly, just hit the tab button to get you back to normal.

Hi Mike,

Without knowing what OS you're using I'm at a stand (I'm assuming XP but if I'm wrong it will be a mess.).
Also what Word Processor and is auto-correct enabled in what browser?
How have you set up "Save" (Or have you?) in what particular format ( Again I'm assuming Windows Office but what version?) ?
You're not giving us much to go on.

I have no experience with Text Aloud, does it have an automatic correction function ?
What does the support site say about the programs it works with ?

My initial impression is that you have skipped some initial setup steps that would have avoided the hassle but without more info I'm not sure what they are.

This is the point where we yell "specs" and ask about updates to all relevant programs ( You do have all updates installed, right?).

Guys I know this much about "Text Aloud" it's got a" lock" function that requires re-typed corrections and that varies depending on whether or not it's XP or some other OS.
My info maybe out of date, like I said I've no experience with it, but it's possible that he'll have to make the changes in "Text Aloud".

He's probably hitting the Insert key - on my keyboard it's right above the Delete key and easy to hit it by mistake.

Hi again

The Insert key is the culprit.
I just tried it in several programs and it did turn "Over Type Mode" on and off.
I've always been able to turn it off in Word by going to Options, but it didn't show a key binding.

This seems to be universal for all programs that allow you to type in them.
Word, Text Aloud, Live Mail, Note Pad, etc.

Thanks for the help.

Mike

This is a good reminder for me too. It happens to me too in Microsoft Office programs. Just did the other day. What I typically dis was just hit enter, finish typing what I want, and then backspace to put it back together again. Still a pain.

Word 2000 and XP tell you in the status bar at the bottom if you are in "insert and replace mode".
