What type of antivirus software should I get?
Hi everyone! I have Windows 7 64-bit home premium.
I plan on surfing the web (and downloading programs) quite a bit, so I definately need a reliable antivirus software. In short, what software should I get? What's the best currently on the market? Thanks for any help! ![]() -Josh |

I am of the opinion that you do not need to pay for anti-malware protection to get good protection. I like MSE and AVG, in that order.
There is more out there in both freeware and trialware. http://www.filehippo.com/software/antimalware/antivirus

All paid AVs are now subscription based. That means paying every year. Best is now Vipre, but it's not free. Best of the free ones is MSE. Personally, I'd take MSE: it's easy on resources and quite good at its task. No AV program will catch everything, so that pretty much defeats the purpose of paying.

Thankyou for the help, everyone! So if I download MSE, I should be set to go?
Also- Should I download a second antivirus, to be safe? Thanks, -Josh |

Yes to the first, and no to the second.
![]() One antivirus is all that is needed. Running two is not reccomended. Running more than one spyware or adware progrmam can be beneficial. |

Most antivirus programs, upon being installed, add an option to the contextual menu so that when you right-click on a file/selected group of files you can scan them ("Scan with AVG...", for example).
For spyware, Superantispyware seems to be the one nowadays. Add Malwarebytes' Antimalware and you have a good kit. Combofix is also good, but works only with XP. |

Yes to both. Just don't run them simultaneously. What I do is let MSE run in the background all the time and then do a full scan with AVG and Avast periodically....to catch what MSE might have missed.

If you want to run two av programs, use Immunet, it's cloud based so it doesn't drag your system down. I've been using it for several months with no issue's, had a few false positives but Immunet sorts them out rather quickly. Program is free and like most freebies, it has a paid version but I'm running the free version.
