Driver Boost

Has anyone ever used drive boost. It said I had 16 out of date drivers. So I pulled up device manager and clicked on each one. I did an update driver from the driver menu when you double click on it. I let windows search and it said the best driver was already installed. Is this program nothing but junk or is it a legit program?

Thanks.

As you saw first hand - it's not very hard to update drivers yourself

Then there's the part about new drivers not neccessarily being better drivers..

"If it ain't broke......

I have tried these before. The deal is it will scan your system for free and find drivers that have been replaced with newer drivers.

They want money to update your old drivers though. The question then remains, are the newer drivers better? Sometimes you might be opening up a can of worms by updating your drivers when everything is already working fine.

These businesses are not a scam necessarily, it's just unnecessary to pay to update drivers.

That is what I thought. It did help me find a better driver for a few things and one thing that had no driver. The windows 7 looking for drivers was pretty cool. Not sure if XP does the same thing searching for the drivers for you.

It's s'posed to, but it's not as efficient as Vista/7's.

Don't let yourself catch the updatitis contagion: if it works, there's no need to update it.

Yea that can be true but I updated my printer driver and it actually improved the features on the print options screen. Now I can do a lot more things on print preview, order ink right from the page and a bunch of other stuff.

These programs are like making out your taxes... sure the forms are free and anyone can file a return for themselves, but having an expert accountant do it is faster and tends to be a lot safer.. not to mention, gets you more money back lol

If you do go with a tool like this, just make sure the company is legit, BBB etc and you're good to go.

One thing I like to do with these driver update softwares is I will let it do its scan and tell me which drivers are out of date. Then I will go on my own and look up these drivers and decide if its worth installing. I do not like anything that installs or updates anything on its own. But that is just me.

Yes exactly! I actually sometimes use it on PC's just to see the make and model of a particular advice... see, these programs do have a purpose even if you don't want to pay to have it direct you to the proper driver so to speak. You can use them just to analyze and troubleshoot.

I prefer Belarc Advisor for this purpose.

Hey awesome.. I just looked it up, it looks like it's designed for a more technical audience and for bulk users (they charge as well).

Too bad I was going to try it out..

don't bother

as everyone realizes u can get updates free. I forked over the cash in hopes of getting a scanner driver for my 7 system that I could not find & after paying all I got was sorry there is no driver for that scanner. So I essentially gave them $30.00 to tell me what I should have already known. I'd say use it to scan & then cancel & do the updating yourself. It does not take 'days' as their home page ad says to update yourself & windows 7 will do most of the searching for you. Well, time to go bury my head.

Update

So, it is now Sept 22 & I am still waiting on a promised refund. They (driverboost) said they would provide the refund immediately after I realized they could provide nothing I needed & emailed them. That was Aug 25th & as of this morning I've sent 5 emails & begun a paypal dispute in hopes of actually getting the refund. These jokers are quick to reply via email about what they cannot do for you but when it comes to doing the right thing it seems they are less than enthusiastic. all I say is stay away.

I find one good way to update your driver's is to do the Windows update but here is a problem I have run into many times more so with XP Machines after doing a reformat for a friend or someone and once Window's is installed the Ethernet Card driver is not there and I have tried using Belarc Advisor to see if it would tell me the device or and sometimes it does'nt know,I either try using a driver pack disc that you can purchase that has many different drivers for many different device's and I took my disc's that have purchased and have had given to me and took all the file's on each disc and merged them into a 45GB ISO Image that I can mount into a Virtual drive and go into the device Manager and I tell it I want to search for the driver on my PC and target the Vitual Drive CD/DVD Drive once I have mounted the Image into the Virtual drive and if it's in there all is good,I also have another device that is made by TrendNet that is called and RJ45 to USB what it means is this RJ45 is what they the plug on a Ethernet Cable and what you do with this device is plug your Ethernet Cable that would go into the PC into one end of the the RJ45 to USB and the other has a USB Plug and that plug's into any USB port on your PC and then you load a driver from the disc that came with it and now you have a Temporary Ethernet Card and you can see if Window's can find the propper driver with Windows update.Another good way is to use a driver Utility that you can get from Intel's site and works good for Intel PC's and it will find chipset drivers and also other certain brands such as Realtek drivers as well as others from what I remember check ou the links below.
