Norton Ultilities 14.5

I installed NU 14.5, and ran registry optimizer and another utility, at this point I'm so frazzled I can't remember which.
This is a list of problems I'm experiencing:
1: At startup, the wallpaper hangs for minutes while waiting for the taskbar and start menu to come up.
2: Opening any option from the control panel causes long pauses, sometimes a window will flash in and out.
3: My taskbar appearance is very different, almost looks like win98.

I've restored to when I first installed NU, but don't notice any changes.
I uninstalled NU, also no changes...
When it was installed, it would not open from the icon on the start menu, only from the icon in the systray.

At this point I'm afraid to shut down, in fear that the desktop will freeze and not have a taskbar or start menu...

I'm not sure what NU did, but I'm in shock. I thought the install and running the utilities would make the computer run smoother, instead it is running worse than it ever has....
any help or suggestions at this point greatly appreciated....
oh yes, I am operating XP home....

restore

I restored to two days ago, now I'm back up again running normal...
I guess I just can't trust Norton software...

Not any more. Avoid like the plague.

Other than what comes with Windows, all you really need is CCleaner and Microsoft Security Essentials. Expect MSE to update itself daily unless you turn that off - I seem to remember you are still on dialup.

The days of needing a 3rd party utility suite are long gone.

NU: the plague

thanks GLC-

I remember when using win95 and 98, NU was a great way to clean up the registry...I guess they've lost their edge...
I do like the restore facility in XP...no more have to do a DOS regedit_restore...
I'll look for CCleaner...
and yep, still on dial up (the only option in this very rural area is smoke signals...)

once again, I know I can count on good advice here....MUCH better than 3rd party software....

thanks again-

Well, you should have satellite as an option.

I don't think it was Norton losing their edge so much as it was Microsoft making improvements making Norton Utilities obsolete.

If you think about it, if someone was out there was writing software which corrects major flaws or annoyances about your software, wouldn't you be inclined to write better software?

I'm not saying Windows is perfect now, it's not, but I think it is better than is used to be.

well, ya...thanks but I live on the south side of a 1600' hill...I just barely get satellite tv. one of my neighbors who lives higher on the hill has satellite internet. I wasn't real impressed with the speed.
the modem with it's own processor on board that you recommended a little while back has greatly improved my internet speed.
I don't spend that much time online, I'm partly retired and I don't find the higher price to be worth it...

as far as Norton losing it's edge or not...after what NU did to my computer, I don't think I'll ever use the program again, nor recommend it to anyone that I like...it was a complete waste of my time, and scared the vinegar out of me.

When I got my first Windows computer in 2000, Norton was considered the best, followed by McAfee, at least as far as AV. Now, I wasn't here then and took the word of magazines (which I have learned since then might have their perceptions molded by advertisers), and of course most desktops had Norton (including my Gateway at the time), but there might have been some truth to it. Just a few years later, just at the end of my warranty on the Gateway, I put an updated version of Norton on it after getting it back from Gateway Country, and it screwed the machine up. I cannot recall what it did (the record might even be here). but I finally traced it to it. While on the topic, but earlier (I think) I also had problems with the Promise Controller software conflicting with the twain driver, but that is a whole other can of worms.

Marketing, marketing...

You'd be amazed at the number of people that come to our shop claiming that Norton is the bomb and mother of all AV's.

Norton Antivirus was an excellent product through 2003. The 2004 version was just awful, and when Norton stopped providing updates for 2003 I bailed and haven't looked back. Norton Utilities was pretty useful back in the Win 95/98/NT days, but for XP they are pretty useless. Since Symantec bought out Norton they have done everything they can to trash it. They have the ability to kill everything they have bought - like Ghost, Partition Magic, and Backup Exec.

We could then say that Symantec is pretty much the large bowels of IT, then. Whatever falls in is turned into..., well, you know.

The enterprise edition of their AV software is good.

Most consumer stuff...garbage.
