The favoured tool around here for registry "cleaning" is Ccleaner. You can download a free copy here:
Piriform - Download CCleaner, Defraggler, Recuva, Speccy - Millions of users worldwide!
or here:
FileHippo.com - Download Free Software

I've only seen the CCleaner mess up one computer registry and that was a computer riddled with trojans. Once it cleaned up the registry, the computer wouldn't boot. However, had it not been in such a huge mess, I think it would have been fine. I have used it on three computers several times without any problems.

quartet, would you say that there was a noticeable improvement after cleaning the registry w/Ccleaner? If so, what was improved?

Well, mine wasn't bad so I m not sure I noticed much. On one hand it is better to leave it alone than to mess it up. However, the more stray entries there are, the more it could be bogged down. You could scan and see what (how much) it finds. You can then decide if you want to delete or not.

Yeah, I think these registry cleaners are best used by experienced users that have the ability to choose which items found NOT to delete. Too many times, I've had to reinstall Windows on computers with very odd problems and most of them had some kind of registry cleaner operated by a novice user.

Thanks for your reply!
