You're not running the current version of Windows Live Messenger. Try downloading & installing the latest version:

Windows Live Messenger 2011 - Instant messaging (IM), video chat

I upgraded to 2011 but hated it so I downgraded. 2011 wasn't logging in either.

What Operating System are you running?

What Anti-Virus and security software are you running?

Are you using anything other than the built-in windows firewall?

You really do need some anti-virus software installed. There is plenty of free stuff out there. Right now, the recommended software on the forums is Microsoft's Security Essentials.

Run a scan with Security Essentials, and also download, install, and run a scan with malwarebytes.org

From what I can tell, the crash seems to occur when a 3rd-party application interacts with WLM (Windows Live Messenger) when it shouldn't be.

So, clean up your system and make sure that isn't causing an issue.

I have got norton antivirus now but I am pretty careful.

I can't understand why some programs are just crashing as soon as I try to load them.

Try turning off NAV and try MSE in its place.

I only just downloaded NAV, so I know it is not the problem.

I had an issue with the new ATI drivers which kept causing BSoD, which a lot of others are having a problem with so I reverted to an older version which has fixed it but for some reason I am having problems with other programs?

Oh no!....why did we not have an intervention to get him to stop? How did we fail him? Peter Norton's evil child takes control of another soul.

If you are "downloading" commercial software without paying for it, you are going to have problems................

MSE is legitimately free. Is your Windows 7 legitimate?

Pre-installed

I think the virus came from from a USB stick from my university computers. Took a while to remove it off my USB stick but it spread to my other USB stick and for some reason I can't remove it off that one.

I've found that repairing or reinstalling programs has fixed the problems with the crashes. Perhaps it wasn't the ATI driver update, just so happened that it was the first noticeable file to be corrupted causing my BSOD and downgrading it repaired it.
