Fujtisu Siemens Amilo Random re-starts

Hi,

I have been given the challenge of trying to fix a friends laptop.

Vista software

It randomly restarts during use..I managed to get it going last night , and ran and updated the virus software...no bugs found!

If I get to the stage where I can shut it down normally, it appears to re-start without any problems, then randomly restarts during use. I did wonder if this was me moving the screen, but does not appear to be consistent.

I have fully charged the battery, and it is connected to the mains when it restarts during use.

It does get hot, but the fan appears to be working.

I have had the error code C00021A fatal error system on blue screen, but only once.

Bit confused as software /windows appears to run fine sometimes, but I cannot influence the random shutting down and re-starting.

Please help!

Thanks

Is your pc randomly rebooting itself? You can go to

Control Panel->System icon->Advance tab->Startup & Recovery Settings button. UNcheck/disable the "auto reboot" option. Instead of rebooting you'll probably get a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) which can be searched on for a solution.

You can go to Advanced Search to search on for example: STOP 0x00000050

Yeah, it is randomly rebooting itself...then says it did not turn off properly..safe mode/normal windows options etc etc or sometimes it says option to system restore

I will try the option below when I get home and update you.

I have had a blue screen of death before with fatal error: C00021a..?

That is a generic fatal error, we need more information. That's why you need to set it so the bluescreen stays up.

Hi,

Disabled the automatic start up in control panel, however it still randomly restarts itself...no change.

Sometimes getting into windows other times not getting there...

Still no BSOD, and windows works fine if I get in there, just randomly restarts at variable times, yesterday worked for 30 mins then restarted, today, 5 mins then restarted...?

Ideas?

Don't know if this helps, but sometimes the laptop does not appear to acknowledge the power cable...no light coming on , on laptop, to say it is charging/has main source.. and does not boot at all...despite the battery being fully charged! Does this suggest it is a hardware problem?

A very common issues with lappy's is that the ac adaptor attached to the mobo breaks....

Next time it does this - giggle the power cord and see that changes anything.

An arc of electricity due to having a faulty/broken ac adaptor plug could cause both a random reboot and the no power thingie you mentioned.

Ok, thanks...have tried without cable, twisting cable round, booting without battery pack...now won't even start up ...has power light, no boot occurs, and the battery light flashes as if it is charging....could it be knackered hardware...motherboard?

It can maybe be repaired or you might have to replace the mobo. What is the make and modle number of the lappy? Maybe someone here will have had some experience with it.

That's all it says? That's just too generic. I suppose you could download memtest86+ and test the ram. Maybe it is overheating - check the bios for a fan control and tell it to run all the time. Blow the dust out of it.
