what kind of portable software do you like?
Ok I'm like a kid in the candy store. That's a pretty neat idea - portable software. I put some on my external usb harddrive. I don't have a flash drive so it will have to do. One thing I'm confused about is for example: There is a portable spybot. I know sometimes my brother has a lot of spyware and sometimes browsers and even spyware programs he might have on there dont' work due to the infections. But, the system still starts. If I could hook up my usb drive and run say portable spybot for example that would be neat. But what about the definition updates. I guess I would have to make sure I updated it on my machine first. That's the only thing I see being a pain. I thought it was cool to see portable firefox too.
A lot of cool stuff. What kind of portable software do you love to have on your flash or external harddrive? |

Just my files.
Although I did have a copy of PortableApps loaded onto the thumb drive that I just cannot find. I liked the fact that I could run FF portable and leave no traces of my searches or history.

I was reading about Linux Puppy. Kind of cool. You can't boot up on the disk if your machine is windows xp and you have to use an isolated flash drive - since it formats it first. I only have a usb external harddrive with stuff already on it.

Flash drives are dirt cheap - why don't you pick up a few?

I probably will end up picking one or two of them up somtime soon. My external harddrives been meeting most of my needs. Been reading a lot about the flash drives though. Like being able to use it to boost performance on vista operating system and having operating systems like Linux Puppy on them.

I'm tempted to get this one: Centon DataStick Pro 32GB USB (Woot only offers items for 1 day). 32G is overkill though, 2-4G is a good size.

Not too portable but nobody is going to get away with stealing it.

I buy all my flash drives from Micro Center - they are seriously cheap. I can get a 16gig drive for just over $20 or a 8 gig for $12. Plus, they replace them for free should they ever break or die or anything. Gotta love that.
But, anyways, the topic here is portable software. If you were looking for a portable security software, I would very highly recommend using SuperAntiSpyware's portable version and also a full blown anti virus scanner called PC Rescue, which is by Vipre AntiVirus. You expressed concern over the updating of portable security software. With SuperAntiSpyware you can run updates on it once you start the program. Pretty easy. The only potential downside of using the PC Rescue is that you do have to keep downloading the most current issue in order to make sure you have it current. Its still a killer program though. And both are free of course. Other portable software that I use include Glary Utilities, CCCleaner, Recuva Recovery, WinAudit, Keyfinder, and also a free font utility for managing fonts. There is a ton of portable apps out there, but by far the handiest is having security software available on a flash drive. I cannot tell you how many times I have to use my PCRescue to clean out a client's infections. Its awesome. |
