switchboard type software
I'm looking for a software program that will simply pause or even disconnect my internet connection to let my phone ring.
It doesn't need a lot of whistles and bells or advanced features...just so I don't miss any calls while online. I have call waiting. any suggestions greatly appreciated. thanks... |

Call your ISP and ask them if they can provide this:
Online Call Alert - Internet Call Waiting, Online Caller ID and Modem-on-Hold V.92 Software Here is something that's not free, but you can get a 30 day trial: Get CallWave Internet Call Waiting by WebCallWaiting.com |

Vonage will do that. In fact, you can talk on the phone while on the internet at the same time. Vonage is cheap as well. Vonage provides a box with an internet connection in and four internet connections out. The box also has two standard phone jacks that you can plug up to two phones with different phone numbers into. I use one line for our personal number and the other line for my wife's business number.

David, Dan is on dialup, there's no broadband available in his area. Vonage is not an option.

thanks GLC-
I'll contact my isp tomorrow to see if this is available... the 30day software trial appears to work only with the number that they assign to you...which would not be suitable for me as all of my customers know my number. This would require me to contact a large database to notify them, and would also mean I could lose business if not everyone (including potential new customers) updated my number... let's just hope my isp has the other available... thanks again.... ~Dan |

I'm curious, how did you know it was not DSL?

David, we've been helping Dan for years with his 56k modem issues. Besides, DSL runs on top of a voice line and they can be used simultaneously. If he had DSL, he wouldn't need this feature he's looking for.
Dan, as I remember you have a USR modem - it may have come with "modem on hold" software which may do what you want. |

Dan does not have the option of DSL through his phone line? Is he too far away from the switching station?

Been through that - he's in a very remote area. He has 2 choices - dialup or move.
