MSE slow to start

Hi all,

I'm now using MSE for security, and it alll seems fine. but it's very slow to start when I switch the comp on. It can take 4 or 5 minutes, which is very annoying when I need to do a quick email check.
Once started, it runs fine.
I have no performance problems with any other app or utility, and I update and defrag etc. regularly.

XP Pro with SP3

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris.

Look in the SETTINGS tab and change the Run a Scan from daily to some other setting

Thanks Stevy, but what IO meant is that the app itself is slow to start, not that the scan doesn't start....

How long does it take for your computer to start: from the moment you press the power button to the mouse pointer finally staying as an arrow? What are your computer's specs?

Are you sure? Right after the deaktop loads - Are you seeing a moving arrow thingie on the MSE icon that indicates that its scaning? When mine did that - it did suck the life out of my older pc...

Hi guys,

Nuke it's a Dell Optiplex 360......
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name DELL360
System Manufacturer Dell Inc.
System Model OptiPlex 360

BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. A01, 28/11/2008
SMBIOS Version 2.5
Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume2
Locale United Kingdom
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2111)"
User Name DELL360\House
Time Zone GMT Standard Time
Total Physical Memory 4,096.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 2.26 GB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
Page File Space 4.31 GB
Page File C:\pagefile.sys

Regularly updated, defragged etc.

My trusty clockwork stopwatch tells me these times, from cold start:
15 secs 'windows XP' screen
35 secs Welcome screen
40 secs Wallpaper appears, mouse pointer with eggtimer
53 secs "your computer may be at risk"
75 secs normal mouse pointer, but still lots of disc activity
120 secs MSE icon turns green.

Stvy I know what you mean about scan schedule, but it's def. the actual app being slow to start.

The nice man from MS support suggested to run disc cleanup and defrag but also to empty the Preftetch folder - what does that do?

He also suggested this:

Try installing the update
Step 1

1. Click Start, click Run, type notepad and then click OK.

2. Copy the following commands, and then paste them into the Notepad window.

REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S

REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S

REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S

REGSVR32 MUCLTUI.DLL /S

REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL /S

REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL /S

REGSVR32 MUWEB.DLL /S

REGSVR32 QMGR.DLL /S

REGSVR32 QMGRPRXY.DLL /S

3. On the Notepad File menu, click Save As.

4. In the File name box, type register.bat, and then click All Files in the Save as type box.

5. Save the register.bat file to the desktop.

6. Double-click the register.bat file to register the Windows Update files.

7. Try to install updates again.

Anyone know what that is?

Maybe I'm just in a better frame of mind this morning, but it seemed to start quicker than it has been!

Thanks again,

Chris

All that in Notepad just to run a POS from MS?? I've had too many hassles everytime I've installed it. Sometimes it simply disappeared as though uninstalled. Get rid of it and use something else free - AVG, Avira, Malwarebytes, etc.
