e-mail freezes

windows vista os

first thing after a start up, when I try to check my e-mail it opens up, then freezes before getting new mail, after about 3 to 4 minuets if finally gets the mail, after that it will run fine. It did it with outlook and now it's doing it with windows live mail. This is the only program that I have trouble with. Any ideas?

If you turn you pc on and let it sit for ten minutes and then check for new mail does it do the same thing?

If so, then you simply need to wait a little while longer to wait for the pc to finish booting up.

No.. I usually surf the web for at least 1 hour or so .. then check my e-mail.. and it starts but freezes.. can't close it or anything ... it says not responding.. then after a few minuets I can hear the hard drive start up (red led flashes) and it gets my mail..

How much stored mail do you have? Have you tried running the Outlook inbox repair tool? In Live Mail, have you tried any folder maintenance - reindex and compress?

You could also try setting it to not automatically receive or send mail on startup - open it, let it sit for a bit, then hit send/receive.

I'm using windows live mail 2011. I looked this morning.. I couldn't find where to perform the folder maintenance.. re-index & compress.. where is that located? Where would I shut off the receive and send auto. Thanks again.. Also when it happened this morning the whole computer froze.. I'm thinking maybe it's something else.. any thoughts?
