Graphics issues

Hi everyone, I'm really not sure if this is hardware or software related... I just installed an Nvidia gtx550ti (pc has an 850watt <1year old corsiar psu) the asus mb is m2n-e with a single pci-e x16. Win xp 32bit with 4 gigs ram. Running the game Rift after about 20 minutes graphics go all day-glo. I did use memtest and it passed with no memory faults. Any ideas? thanks.

What are your mobo's voltages?

ATX +12v is the only reference to the voltages in the user guide, but that psu has been fine for quite a while. All i changed recently was the graphics card.

No, no. I mean the voltages you're getting from your mobo. You need to use Asus Probe (comes in the mobo's DVD) to monitor your temps and voltages. Install and run that utility and report back before ruling out the video card as the culprit (which it can be indeed).

I once almost RMA'ed a new video card because of the same problem--I even spent money on another video card to have whilst the replacement was sent--and it turned out to be an incorrectly set voltage in the mobo. I canceled the RMA and the video card is still running fine after two years.

Ok, I'll try that but it'll have to wait until tomorrow night.... until then, Thanks!

Edit: I installed asus probe this morning and it threw up a motherboard temp warning. I have been concerned about the pc's location and poor air flow, I may get an antec case with a top 2000mm fan...

Is your Northbridge fan working? I think those were a high failure item in those motherboards.

I'll check the northbridge fan this evening. I added another case fan and replaced an old crusty one, and that has helped the temp stay down but it still gets up there close to setting off the asus probe alarm...

so I still haven't checked the northbrigde fan, however I pulled the pc out of the hutch it was sitting inside of and getting poor airflow. My wife has discovered that the day glo effect happens when she runs rift and a video in firefox at the same time. She has duplicated this result a few times..

I checked the northbridge and the M2N-E has a fanless heat pipe/fins design. It was the similar M2N-E SLI that has the heatsink/fan. We did find that the problem only happens when playing an intensive game and playing a video in firefox at the same time. Hope this helps narrow things down...

It will tell you if it is the card or or the computer. It's pretty easy removing the card and loading the drivers on the test computer. You just need to make sure the PSU of the test computer is suitable.
