Office documents takes long time to open

Hi I am using Office 2003 on XP Pro and the issue is that if a doc, ppt or xls is accessed, it takes a very long time for it to open. However if I access the file via launching the app -> File Open.., then it opens very quickly.

What can be done to fix this ?
Thanks !
