I have 2 suggestions :

To find out what's in seemingly duplicate files : WinMerge

To get rid of duplicates when you decide they have to go : clonespy - Home

Can always use the help

I'm gonna give them a try, see what happens.

I remember using another APP, that worked great--but of course I couldn't remember the name for crap For some reason I think it was a Windows program? Sound possible to you?

thanks again

if anyone thinks of any others, let me know. I'll still try some other stuff.

THANKS

Probably the Disk Cleanup app that comes with Windows?

Use a program that tells you which files are suspected duplicates and where they're located. I've had valuable files deleted by apps that are too stupid to tell whether two files with the same name and extension and size really contain the same data. Go through the list that is presented to you and proceed with caution. It's better to live with duplicated files than to nuke something that is useful/needed either by you or the system. If you're running low on hard drive real state it's best to just buy a new hard drive than to take chances.

Long ago in a galaxy far away (that may have been called Win 3.11) there was a tool that could give you a view of all the files on your machine in one long list, ignoring folders/directories.

Something like that would enable you to do it manually, if you sorted alphabetically......

Unless they are a problem I would leave them alone. I have deleted duplicate files in the past which created problems that I did not have before.

Hey David M,
Thanks. I have a bad habit of fixing things that are not really broken. Leave it be is probably the best advice.

I "was" have trouble with the size of my HD's. One day it waould have it as 10GB of free space (which I knew was not correct), then it would go to 80GB free space and I thought maybe I just have a lot of orphan and duplicate files and that was screwing it up. But it wasn't that. So leave alone it is

Thanks for the help
