Adobe Reader Alternative?

I'm shopping for a (free) Adobe Reader alternative again. I used Foxit reader for a long time, but after the latest version I am dumping it. As David M put it so eloquently in his Software 101 evolution analysis:

[Insert software name here] ...has just reached that stage in its evolution called bloatware. It has joined the ranks of Adobe and iTunes which have evolved to be so large that they have lost their ability to stand on their own two legs in order to serve their master well. The next stage is extinction, where then smaller, faster and more efficient software will fill their own environmental niche, grow, evolve to a massive size and then fall by the wayside to extinction.[/SIZE]

I installed the latest Foxit version, but I just don't like the new look, and, even though I unchecked the option for all the Ask.com stuff, it installed it anyway.

So.....what does every one use for their PDF reader? Any alternatives, or should I just give in and install Adobe's version?

Why not install an older version of Foxit?

Download Foxit PDF Reader

Yup, that's what I have done for now...I keep my own local version of "OldVersions" on my computer for just such an emergency...as we all know, newer is not always better.

I tried the newer version because I couldn't get PDFs to open up in Firefox 6 (they will only open in a separate Foxit window, not in the browser itself).

I'm not sure if it is a FF limitation or a Foxit limitation.

I use Evince, although I've recently noticed an issue with some pdfs created with late version software.

Foxit Reader - Download Reader and Add-ons - Foxit Software

I can't vouch for whether it works with Firefox 6 or not though, as I'm not a Firefox user.

The Foxit plugin requires the full reader be installed too.

The Sumatra one doesn't? Or is it just a plugin and not a full reader to begin with?
Not arguing, just never used it.

Sumatra is a full reader with a plugin - as the OP said, Foxit has become too bloated and he's looking for alternatives.

However, the Foxit plugin may work with an old version and it may work in Firefox 6.

Foxit 4 was great. Foxit 5...yeah, it started getting a little bloated. I'm on the fence about recommending it these days.

I never did upgrade from Foxit 2.3. It opened PDFs and that's all I needed.

FileHippo is a great source for older versions of freeware and trialware software. No need to store the older versions.

See column on right....
Download Foxit Reader 5.0.2.0718 - FileHippo.com

filehippo.com is another one. I started using that site after oldversion.com kept their software pool fairly limited. It looks like oldversion has expanded a bit.

Since I am a Linux user, I've been working with Evince for a long time. There's also a version for MS Windows which I am using as well on my Windows 7 Desktop. See Evince/Downloads - GNOME Live!
