UTorrent

I have a pastor friend from out of state who is going to share materials with me in torrent form. He mentioned uTorrent. I have done a little research, but there seems to be some contradictory things. I am sure the material is fine, but does installing UTorrent put my computer at additional risk if the files are clean? For instance does it open a port where others can have access and use for nefarious purposes? What type of precautions should I take should I download it? (I will likely get it from download.com or filehippo, but the question isn't about the download itself, but installing and using it).

It will be fine if all you download is material from a known safe source. You can opt to not share files (upload).

Cool, thanks. I believe you were one that had bad stuff to say about it (in general), but I figure that is if they did it like Napster and you could get from anyone and everyone. I am just going from this one trusted source (although there are other friends who might have gospel things I can use).

Torrents are great for downloading files from legitimate sources. They are fast and secure. I use them for Linux files all the time and I prefer that method over all others. Of course you will need torrent software.

BitTorrent - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Torrents get a bad name from piracy and often can be infected with virus'.

There's nothing wrong with the bittorret protocol or the more popular bittorrent clients. It's what you do with them that can cause trouble.
