Refresh shortcuts

I stay "logged in" to several forums. I'm a mod on one, and like to keep up on threads and posts on others.
It seems that most forums do not auto refresh, and the only option that I know of is clicking the refresh button in the address bar, hitting F5 or use a forum based option like "View New Posts". Then it loads the page again. You can call me lazy, but manually refreshing the screen all the time is a hassle. Then times that by every forum that you are visiting. I'm pretty sure that a code can be installed on the forum host side, but have been told that it is "resource heavy".
Is this just the way it is, or there some software/browser plugins out there that solves this issue on the client side ? At the worst, can you create a mouse shortcut to refresh?
My email auto refreshes, IRC is instant and gaming is in real time. And they
don't need to reload the page. Why don't discussion forums work this way?

Cause very few people stay in one spot

My five button mouse doesn't have a refresh option.

I visit 17 forums all day long and simply go from one site to the next.

A little off topic:
I stay logged on 4 forums and keep them on my browser tabs, for the sake of convenience. On other forums, I have asked the question, "Stay logged in or sign out". I have been told "it up to you." Is there a good reason to sign out every time your not looking at the forum?

The only reason to log out is if other people have access to your computer and you don't want them posting as you
