Windows7 and Software help??
I am gathering information for my new computer build. I currently use Windows XP. I am confused by all the versions of Windows7, I do not want to be on a budget for my OS, I want the best, but I was recently told that Windows7 Ultimate has a bunch of applications that I will probably never use. This computer will be used only for home use, but I will be on it everyday. I plan on installing Microsoft Office (which I am open for suggestions there too on which version to get) for which I will mostly be using Excel, and Norton 360 for my security. Also looking for a good Media Player, will the Windows7 media player suffice?
Am I missing any essential Software here to get started? |

You should educate yourself by finding the sites at MS that compare the versions... You can see at a glance what the differences are.
Compare Windows - Microsoft Windows MS Office has the same type of site.

Wikipedia has a very detailed description of the different versions, which is not a Microsoft sales pitch.

You could ease your budget issues by considering one of the Open Office packages.

Unless you have already paid for Norton, I would choose MSE.
Windows Media Player works well enough and it is free. It depends on what you want a media player to do. Last edited by David M; 12-30-2011 at 10:57 AM. |

All most home users need is Windows 7 Home Premium, and 64 bit is recommended for its support for 4gb and more of ram. If you need to connect to a Windows Server domain or want to have XP Mode available, then get Professional. I personally think Ultimate is a waste.
Norton 360 is a waste. MSE and Malwarebytes are free, and Win 7 has a decent firewall. Assuming you have broadband, you should always use a router, even if there's only 1 computer. If all you need is Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote, this should be all you need: Newegg.com - Microsoft Office 2010 Home & Student 3-User This adds Outlook: Newegg.com - Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Business I use VLC (free) for my media player. |

Ultimate is needed only if you need BitLocker and the ability to use Windows in more than one language.
