What am I doing wrong

configuring Outlook 2003? On the outgoing email, it stops at enter network password.

It says "Outlook could not connect to the outgoing SMTP mail server because the server did not accept your user name or password." I have changed the port setting for output and it said it needed authentication which I believe I told it. I tried both editing the existing one and making a new one.

Close and re-open outlook and try again. If it doesn't go through as-is, then:

Usually, the "my outgoing server requires authentication" option needs to be checked with "use same settings as my incoming mail server".

Other than that, check the ports and security information. And check with your host/provider as to what your mail settings should be.

Thanks, I'll have to see. I know the settings (or at least what the Cpanel sign in says they are) through our website's host. (Currently our designer is going to host for us for a year through leased hosting).

The incoming and outgoing do use the same name, but the ports are different. Well, actually I saw no port for the incoming, but the one it is on works.

If it's on the standard SMTP port (25), your ISP may be blocking it. This is pretty standard as an anti-spam measure. My host offers a SMTP server on an alternate port to get around this.

I believe you - but I'd still check

When you first go into account settings there's a box for-> Log on using Secure Password Authentication.

In the MORE Settings button->Out going server -> make sure the first and second boxes are checked.

George, it's not 25, I just checked the settings from the log in here at home. The ISP is Comcrap.

Steve, I will have to check. I know I had clicked on the more settings as part of it and did things more than once. Of course if I am doing something wrong, I can do it wrong several times.

The weird thing is the same thing happened on the assts. computer when I tried to set it up much earlier. She had another one set up and once I deleted one, the other worked. I am not sure whether I deleted one that existed or the one I edited. I will have to compare. I had left mine alone and until I canceled GoDaddy, it still worked for outgoing because I was still using their services to send out. The asst's still works as I asked her on the phone today. I suppose the auto configure might have worked on hers after all or did eventually, but not sure. I tried on mine (although it was geared towards 2000) and it didn't work. I will probably if need be go back with system restore to before then and start from scratch as it was supposed to have changed the registry I think. I believe I had tried manually first though. If nothing else, maybe I can see what the Asst's looks like if the things mentioned above don't work.

There is a way to use the Comcast SMTP server to send the mail. Just set up the authentication to log in to it using your Comcast username and password. I use AT&T's server to send my domain mail.

Thanks, if it comes down to it I will. I don't have the username or password at this point, but can try to get them if need be.

I don't know about your host, but my host (Surpass) also uses Cpanel - and the exact server settings are available.

Log in, click on Email Accounts. You should see a list of accounts, at the far right of each one click More, then Configure Email Client. Mine doesn't have an autoconfigure for Outlook 2003, but the manual settings are listed.

Quote:
Manual Settings
Mail Server Username: myname+mydomain.com
Incoming Mail Server: mail.mydomain.com
Incoming Mail Server: (SSL) pass55.dizinc.com
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.mydomain.com (server requires authentication) port 26
Outgoing Mail Server: (SSL) pass55.dizinc.com (server requires authentication) port 465
Supported Incoming Mail Protocols: POP3, POP3S (SSL/TLS), IMAP, IMAPS (SSL/TLS)
Supported Outgoing Mail Protocols: SMTP, SMTPS (SSL/TLS)
I don't know if yours is the same, but note that the username uses a "+" instead of "@".

George, the ports are the same for outgoing servers, but some of the other settings are different (or at least were when I clicked on configure email client which is where I was getting the settings from. I am getting hosting from the web designer who is leasing it from someone. He is giving us a great price and is going to manage the content for us (within reason) for a year. So, I don't have access to everything that he does. I guess if it matters we are technically using CPanel Accelerated 2.

I had tried using the autoconfigure for 2000 on my 2003 once I couldn't get it to work manually using the settings I mentioned above. I had noticed the + at some point and had tried that too. It didn't seem to make a difference and I am pretty sure I didn't use it on the assistant's (one worked and another didn't), so I am not sure if the autoconfigure worked and set up the second one on hers (which did work) or if that was something someone else had done to supplement some other software she uses with member info. Anyhow, I do want to take a peek at the one working on hers tomorrow and see what is set up. I don't know if the username (with the + ) is used for logging in to get the emails or not, but that still works, it is the outgoing where the problem is.

Okay, I have it working now, but I have another question. There are a couple of messages that I want to import to my current inbox. These were doing a point where I had tried another account and forgot to tell it to leave them on the server. Currently they are saved as email on a jump drive.

If they are the standard .msg files you should be able to drag them from the flash drive to any Outlook folder.

I was having trouble finding a folder within the program, but was able to drag and drop into the open Outlook itself. Thanks.
