Java Problems

Thank you for your prompt response. My problem is I tried the suggested solutions before I submitted the post. When I attempted to remove Java using the Control Panel site, I got the 1723 error message. I can find no other way to remove it.

You may have to uninstall manually.
It's finicky but here are instructions : Remove Java Manually ? - Yahoo! Answers

When you're done repair the windows installer : How to Repair Windows Installer Errors

If you already have a registry cleaner use it, you don't have to buy another.

Thank you for your response Pam. I attempted to follow your suggestions and got the following error message: “Error in advpack Missing entry: dll.LaunchINFSection". I am not a technician and really not quite an "upper-level novice" so I do not know a lot about the problem other than a dll is dynamic link required to start up or run a program. It appears this dll is missing. Any suggestions on how I can download this dll and/or continue my efforts to uninstall java so I might reinstall a newer version? Thanks for any advice.

Glc should be back home in Joplin shortly and no longer hooking up to the web "catch as catch can".
Give him a breather and you'll get his answer.

My impulse is to redo the Java install completely but, I admit, that may well be overkill.

Thank you for your response. I will await the return of Glc.

FYI I have no problem with redoing the Jave install completely. I attempted to install but received an error message advising that I must first uninstall the older version.I attempted to uninstall Java but received error message 1723. When I opened the programs and features in the control panel i found a java update file. I attempted to uninstall at this site but received error message 1723.

Hopefully Glc will have some additional suggestions. Thanks again

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions. I only asked for the OS version to help others who may have some ideas.

Pam, I've been home for over a week!

Last ditch possibility here.

ERROR 1723 « How-To Geek Forums

Need access to a second computer that has a working JRE install on it. Involves deleting the JRE6 directory from the messed up machine and copying the JRE6 directory from the good machine back to the bad one.

Juppy, The only other computers in house that are working are a mac book and an older Dell 8100. Would either of these have the JRE6 to which you refer. Keep in mind I am not much over the level of novice.
I also have a Dell Inspirion 6000 with a crashed hard drive that soon will go to recycling process.

Not sure about the mac...the Dell 8100 could possibly have it. Depends how long it's been since Java was updated on it. Not hard to check though. On that 8100 just go into the Windows Explorer (right click the Start button, then left click Explore). In the directory tree on the left, find the Program Files folder, expand that with the + button, then find the Java folder and expand it too. Inside that, see if there is a folder titled JRE6. If so, that would be the folder you're looking for.

All you'd have to do then is copy that whole JRE6 folder (from the 8100) to a flash stick and paste it into the same spot on the machine you're trying to fix (after deleting the JRE6 folder on the broken machine first, of course). I'm not sure what the exact location would be on your newer machine though, since you said it's using Win 7. Should be close to the same location though....if you can find the Java folder, the JRE6 folder would just go copied inside that one. Hope that wasn't too confusing....I was trying to break it down best I could.

I wonder if the Java un-installation procedure via 'Control panel > Programs and Features' would work if Windows was running in Safe Mode? It could be worth a try.
