Moved to new computer

My daughter just bought a new lap top. I loaned her my portable hard drive to move all her files from the old computer to the new one. She told me the documents & pictures went OK but she can't get I-Tunes to open her music files. I have never used I-Tunes so I am at a loss to help her. Any suggestions ?

iTunes also offers to backup into iCloud (to their server). Than later she could install iTunes on her new laptop, login to her account and retrieve everything...

then easiest way to move everything is through "transfer files and settings to another computer".
If you open Control Panel - Getting started. There is Windows Easy transfer

That's not the problem. She moved everything but I-Tunes won't import her music files.

Are there exclamation points next to each song title? If so it is because the Itunes Music Library.xml was transferred over with the songs and Itunes is looking for the actual songs in the wrong place.
If they just won't open I had that happen recently and it was just a matter of upgrading Itunes as the version on the PC was wonky.

I see by your last post that she may not even be seeing the song titles so I may be way off.

Moved from Apple to Software - if Pam sees this she should have the answer for you.

I *think* you have to export everything to the external from within iTunes, then import it, again using iTunes. You also have to deauthorize the old computer and authorize the new one.

If I have her use the Easy Transfer, will the settings be transferred also? If so, the new computer should be nearly a clone of the old one?

She will be able to choose which settings to transfer. It only transfers user folder files and settings.

You can authorize up to 3 computers to the same iTunes account, but it doesn't work that well on Windows compared to Mac.
I have both, I stopped using iTunes on Windows, it's just a waste of my time.
...but it runs flawlessly on a Mac.

She has to re-authorize her account, the limit is 5 computers, but if she's gone over that for some reason Apple will let you wipe the backlog and start over once a year.
Make sure she's using the same ID (her email address) and password.

If iTunes still won't cooperate then I need to know about Internet connection and what security software she's using.

Edit : this has come up several times on the iTunes forum : https://discussions.apple.com/message/17342163#17342163

I'm not convinced but if your daughter went through all the steps this glitch could be the problem.
Post what's been done and I should be able to walk you both through it.

Glad she's up and running, the iCloud has back ups of all her music bought on iTunes.
At a guess she didn't get the authorization wrong otherwise they couldn't have done the repair from iTunes support so a download problem of some sort.
