Photo editing program

What is a good, free photo editor? Is Irfranview about it?

The best free photo editor is gimp, its just as powerful as photoshop its just not near as user friendly.
Edit, GLC beat me to it, that's what I get for opening multiple tabs to answer.

Gimp is good. A couple of others I've tried do a pretty good job too and might also be worth considering:

Photoscape does cropping, resizing, enhancing, red-eye removal, sharpening and other edits. It can add text, frames and borders if needed. Includes filters for giving photos special effects. Not a bad program all in all.

Photoscape

Serif supply a free version of PhotoPlus. They call it a 'Starter' but I think all that means is that it's an earlier version of their current program. It works well and is unlimited but Serif will of course want you to pay for an upgrade to the latest version. You don't have to do it though. Serif software is good in my opinion.

Free Serif software

How basic and free is still good enough? Picasa does basic stuff.

Well, Irfanview does the basics and has no excess baggage. I suggested Gimp for something a lot more full-featured.

Irfranview had some nice things, but either wouldn't do some things I wanted to do, or I couldn't find out. I remember hearing of Gimp and Picasa back in the day. I have several to consider now. Thanks.

Gimp is very powerful but there is a learning curve as with any advanced software. There are a few excellent books that are reasonably priced to help you along the way. Both of the books listed are very good.

Beginning GIMP: From Novice to Professional (Beginning from Novice to Professional): Akkana Peck: 9781590595879: Amazon.com: Books

Amazon.com: GIMP 2.6 for Photographers: Image Editing with Open Source Software (9781933952499): Klaus Goelker: Books

One of the nice things about gimp is you can watch a tutorial on youtube that will walk you through just about anything your trying to do with it. It has a huge user base and its freeware, but the best thing about gimp is that it works in linux just as well as it does windows or mac. I love photoshop, but getting it to work with linux is more work than its worth.
