Help with Tracert?
Might someone be able to tell me what the MS columns represent in the results of "tracert?" There are 3 columns each of which give a result. I've been having a lot of trouble with AT&T Broadbands "blazingly fast" internet service and was told by them to run "tracert" which I have done numerous times and sent to them. They tell me that there is not a problem, yet I see very large increases in MS from one hop to the next (usually within the first 3 hops)The problems are intermittent and the large jumps can be in any of the colummns.I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!
Here is an example: Tracing route to broadband.att.com [198.178.8.166] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 * 491 ms 233 ms 24.147.44.1 2 2 ms 5 ms 2 ms 24.128.190.81 3 2 ms 2 ms 2 ms SRP4-0-WOBNMA1-RTR02.necore.mediaone.net [24.147 .0.217] 4 3 ms 3 ms 2 ms 12.125.33.5 5 5 ms 4 ms 4 ms gbr2-p60.cb1ma.ip.att.net [12.123.40.142] 6 * * * Request timed out. 7 * * * Request timed out. 8 * * * Request timed out. 9 2311 ms 40 ms 36 ms gbr4-p30.sl9mo.ip.att.net [12.122.2.206] 10 3376 ms 37 ms 38 ms gbr1-p70.kszmo.ip.att.net [12.122.2.41] 11 * * * Request timed out. 12 * * * Request timed out. 13 * * * Request timed out. 14 * * * Request timed out. 15 * * * Request timed out. 16 * * * Request timed out. 17 * * * Request timed out. 18 * * * Request timed out. 19 * * * Request timed out. 20 * * * Request timed out. 21 * * * Request timed out. 22 * * * Request timed out. 23 * * * Request timed out. 24 * * * Request timed out. 25 * * * Request timed out. 26 * * * Request timed out. 27 * * * Request timed out. 28 * * * Request timed out. 29 * * * Request timed out. 30 * * * Request timed out. |

ms=milliseconds
From the tracert you posted, you have got MAJOR problems. If this is your ISP, it's time to raise a little H, E, double hockey sticks. |

No kidding!! I thought I got bad numbers from Ameritech DSL. Now on AT&T's defense, they very quickly put together their own broadband network when they lost @home, so there are bound to be some lag points.

In my area they went from Mediaone Roadrunner to AT&T. It's still no excuse for poor service. But that's not my issue. My issue is, I send these traces to AT&T and they say they are normal. I say not, but that is what I'm asking here. What do these traces mean? Does anyone know?

Each hop (computer, called a Node) between you and the ISP is represented by the numbers above.
Any time a hop is more than a few milliseconds, or times out completely (like yours do) it's an indication of a serious problem. It means that computer cannot respond to a request (a ping) from your computer, within a reasonable amount of time, and it simply times out. Having 30 or more hops to your ISP is total bullshirt!!! It should be less than 10, hopefully even less than that, and responses should all be less than 5ms, with no timeouts. |

I know i am late but would you run another tracerT and post me the finding.
tracerT www.yahoo.com for me and post them. But according to the one you have posted the problem starts at the 6th hop or nod from your computer. I do ADSL tech support for a different company but i might be able to give you a few idea what to tell tech support. For Starters get, someone to run a TracerT to your IP address. See if the Time outs are in the same locations. I would be interested in your ping times to www.yahoo.com ping www.yahoo.com (this is standard 32 bytes) I would even like to see the results if you have someone ping your IP address. see if you get more time outs with pinging with more bytes. You should not get time outs like that. if the time outs where between you and the first hop i would believe that it was either the pc or the line to the line, and would set up a fw line tests and stuff. If you want I could probably find time in the next few days to help you with a few pings and tracerT to you. if you want drop me an email byte@pcmech.com If you have ICQ message include you number and I could contact you via icq or email. yoiu might also want to look into www.dslreports.com They deal with all boardband. cable, dsl, satilite. one other site you might want to look into www.toast.net for a speed test, but honestly I don't even trust this time for a reliable speed test.

Hope I don't interfer here - You also could Download Visual Route - from http://www.visualroute.com and then istall it - it's a small file and the install is simple and easy -- Last version is 6.0 something and you can use it for thirty days for free - this give you a better picture than tracert..as it shows you exactly where the speed drops and where your ping or trace is moving through..

That's nothing to worry about at all. It's only 7ms to the second hop so it's not affecting you in the least.

I recieved an e mail saying somebody replyed to a thread that i'm subscribed to. (this one)
I don't remember subscribing to any threads recently so I checked it out. I thought somebody was using my account! LOL Then i see the thread was started on 01-02-2002, 06:14 PM Wouldn't it be better to start a new thread then to resurrect one thats 3 years old? Last edited by jokerman; 12-23-2004 at 07:33 AM. |
