What "Disk Imaging Utility" will work on a Dual Boot Sytem??
I have a Dual Boot Sytem (I had this done professionally, as I attemted to do this myself but was unsuccessful. I have to enter my Bios Settings in order to switch between the two Operating Systems.) running Win XP on one separate Hard Drive and 98SE on the other Hard Drive.
The "System Restore" feature that comes with XP(and ME) is good idea. IT'S TOO BAD THAT THE DAMN THING DOESN'T WORK HALF THE TIME!! This is why I decided to try one of the backup utilities currently available. I bought "Go Back Deluxe 3" from Roxio. This is a very powerful utility and I would reccommend it to anyone looking to purchase a good Disk Imaging Utility. However I would not recommend it to anyone with a Dual Boot pc like myself. The problem with Go Back on Dual Boot systems is that when you choose a "restore" point on the 98 Hard Drive to go back to, Go Back will automatically go to that restore point on the OTHER Hard Drive! Go back does something to the Master Boot Record, affecting both Operating Systems. I originally installed Go Back on my 98 Hard Drive. But when I was in my XP Hard Drive, I could not see my 98 Drive from 'My Computer'! For some reason, Go Back would hide the hard drive. I installed Go Back on my XP Hard Drive and then was able to see my Win 98 hard drive. Unfortunately I had to uninstall Go Back as it was causing all kinds of problems: It would not allow me to start XP for reasons I still can't figure out. I was getting Blue Screens Errors with "Go Back" listed as the cause of the error(s), MS Dos Compatibility Mode Errors, and I lost all my restore points on both Hard Drives. I contacted Roxio Tech Support and was told that there really was no precedent for someone using Go Back on a Dual Boot system. I returned it for a refund. I'd like to know if there is another backup utility that I might be able to get to work on my Dual Boot System without affecting the Master Boot Record. I'm really not crazy about Norton Ghost. I had Norton Utilities 2001 when I was running Win ME and it was total crap! Is there any other Backup Utility that might work on my system??

I honestly don't know whether it will solve your issue, but Drive Image Pro from Powerquest is very highly regarded as an imaging utility in the Ghost class and it does not require a DOS boot disk to run. I know it works beautifully in XP. I also hear that the built in XP backup works very well, but this won't help you with 98, whose backup utility is pretty basic.

I do not know if this utility would be of any help, but I have used a Seagate program called Disc Wizard 2000. The link is http://www.seagate.com/cgi-bin/discwiz.cgi
You have to fill out a form to download it, but it is free. I started the program and went to bed. When I woke up I had an exact image of the drive. Swapped out the drives, and booted from the new one OK.Great program! |

Don't judge Ghost by it's brothers. It has nothing in common w/ NU or the like. Ghost is perfectly simple and powerful. Runs out of it's own directory from any HD; nothing needs to be written to the registry, no system files are installed. Your OS's never have to know Ghost is being used. Easily back up partitions or entire drives. IMHO, it is an absolute must for anyone running multi OS's. |

Ghost is very nice, but I second the vote for PowerQuests Drive Image. I bought Drive Image and Drive Copy when they first came out along with Partition Magic. I was surprised, PowerQuest wrote a really good set of programs.
Respectfully, Demosthenes |
