Hey everyone,
I've been playing my guitar a lot for a few months now and I'd like to start recording it to my computer. Not looking to do anything fancy or make any gold records here, just recording it to be able to tweak it a bit (adjust volume, etc.) and maybe burn it to a CD to play it back for myself. I gave it a try yesterday by setting up a cheap Radio Shack mic in front of my amp and I recorded it into Cool Edit. Let's just say it sounds like it was recorded with the original Edison phonographs. So, what are some good options? Get a better mic, and keep using Cool Edit? I was also thinking of running a cable from the amp to the line-in of my sound card (see below), would that work as well? Also, what cables and such would I need? As for the editing, I'm looking at Cakewalk Guitar Tracks 2, any other software recommendations? Guitar
Thanks. Note: The General Software was the best forum I could think of to put this since it deals with music software. Will we be seeing a Audio/Video forum soon?

Hey Doc,
How long of a book would you like me to write? Okay, first.....ditch the Radio Shuck-n-Give mic. I'll suggest four mics that are unde $100 and do a very good job for recording: Audio Technica Pro 4L Beyerdynamic TGX58 AKG Emotion series (actually 2 are under $100) Sennheiser Evolution series E85s You'll also want a small mixer to better handle the mic input. Again, I'll give you a few options: MIDIMan Multimixer 6 or 10 Samson MDR-6 Soundcraft Notepad Again, since this is just for a guitar (and maybe vocals??) nothing real complex. Now for the compressor -- guitar can be tough to record due to it's broad dynamic range. The best little compressor I've ever used is the Alesis Nanocomp. So for all three, you're around $300. Good places to look on-line would be www.sweetwater.com, www.zzounds.com and way over in sunny Wisconsin--> www.fullcompass.com At that point, you've got to get things set up. I'm not going to tell you how to set up the compressor, that's left to you (you've got to learn something now don't you??). As for micing your amp, the best place to put the mic is off axis to the center of the speaker -- about half way between the center of the cone and the foam outer ring. From here, you're on your own. The best way to learn os to play with settings and find what sounds best to you. And before you ask, yes, you really do need a mic, mixer and compressor to record effectively. -Craig **Edit for the good Doc so he doesn't get a cheezhead complex** Last edited by audiyoda; 06-02-2002 at 11:57 PM. |

Craig, I think you've got my post mixed up with N8's guitar post.
Either way, thanks for the great tips and recommendations. I'll take a look at zzounds and see what they have.

www.line6.com
It's pretty good, especially for the price. You can also download 'Pro Tools Free' and yes it's free but the line6 lets you plug your guitar right into your computer, and has a choice between 20 different amps to choose from. This way, no need for a mike. I have played guitar for years, in and out of many bands, played quite a few shows too, and I wish that I had some of this kind of stuff back then. No web sites for garage bands that long ago. |
