New audio format!!!???!!!

As per my knowledge, MP3 format is the ofrmat widely used to keep the audio files to the minimum size. But recently one of my friend had given me a ordinary CD of 650MB containing about 1000 songs. When checked, the file extension found to be .wma and the size of each file is less than 1000kb. For example a song of 3.17minutes is having a file size of 503KB. A song of 6.3 minutes is having file size of 984KB. These songs are played in Winamp. Please let me know whether this is a new format??
Is there any software to convert .mp3 or .cda files to this reduced .wma format. Please help me.

Regards

Srinath

Windows Media Audio. It has been around for some time. It's made by M$ so it comes to no surprise it ain't very popular.

MP3 or if I remember VOC formats are still the best of the compression formats to retain sound quality.

wma audio format seems to be coming on strong. Curious to see if it can actually surplant mp3. I don't think it will. But I have read a lot of opinions where that disagree with mine.
