Refresh Rate, Just What Is It?

What is a 'refresh rate, and what does it do? I'm running a GeForce2 Ultra on a Sony 420GS monitor that is capable of 100+ refresh rate. What is a good rate to set this? Is higher better? At present I have it set at 85 and it appears to run good, but would going higher be more of a benefit? The machine is used primarily for gaming. Since I'm not sure what refresh rate is, here is the rest of my system specs, just in case; AMD XP1600+, 384 megs of PC2100 DDR, SB Live value card. Thanks!!!!!!!

Thanks Cricket, that's just what I wanted to know. Since my screen has no flicker, I guess 85 is a good place to stay!! Thanks again for the link, it was very infomative!!!!
