CD-RW not recognized

ok
My cd-rw was working fine until I downloaded Medai player 7.1 then when I tried to burn anything it would lock up .

I went to Adaptec web site they said that some adaptec driver with win98 and media player don't work. so i downloaded the fix and uninstalled media palyer 7.1

I reinstalled apix.vxd in the IOSUSSYS file
and winaspi.dl and wnaspi.dl in the system file
I also renamed the old files
I uninstalled and reinstalled cd-rw software and cd-rw
ummm
The burner works fine I can play music and retrieve files off of it but it's not being seen by my Burning software i tried 3 different programs??

Forgive my Ignorance highrise, but that wouldn't be the update I got from adaptec would it?? firmware Hmmm??

Also I was just messing around some more with It (my cd-rw)and I removed it from the device manager, then I changed it to slave and my cd player to master, and when I rebooted, it loaded as a standard cd- player hmmm I was just wondering should I have a scsi adapter even though it's a IDE seems like I had a scsi adapter in the device manager before now I don't ??

It's a cheap o cd-rw a"Hi-VAL" cd-rw based on adaptec techology so the manual says

Ok this hardware works on the " Bring your own bios" technology
You have to check the manufacturers web site for a firmware update if one is available. Basically you are going to flash the bios chip on this drive. Myself I never have done it since the need has not yet arisen, not to mention I have not been experimenting for a few months now. I've simply been to busy. I don't belive it is terribly difficult. Also if you check around on the software manufacturers web sites, they usually list the makes and models of the hardware that require firmware updates. You can also do a search here about firmware upgrades and try asking other members.

What kind of drive is it? Also does it still look the same in the device manager? Depending on the age & model of the drive it may be going bad, here lately I have seen a few IDE cdrw drives go bad, and they do strange things when this happens, can read but not burn, read some CD's but not others, ect...

Thanks a lot guys for the input!!
SShal you stuck a nerve, The Cd-rw was acting funny before it stopped working, and in the device manager and I uninstalled it and it reinstall it did install different (Different name ) .
So I went out and bought a new one and It works great no problems went right in and NO ERROR messages for a change.

I am now a burning fool once again, I got my first digital camera and save the pics. to CD. Thanks again
