pirates beware
Windows XP SP1 and Windows 2000 SP3 have new feature built into windows update to catch pirates, although m$ says the information collected is not saved !!!
So if you are using bootleg software,, beware http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/about.asp? |

I know I have nothing to be afraid of, for I have purchase every software on this Computer. If more bootleggers were caught, maybe software prices wouldn't be so darn high. I see nothing wrong in an update service looking at software on your computer and seeing if you have valid serial numbers, as long as it doesn't use or store the information or sell the information to others. The update programs could simply state it will not update your OS or program until you get legit copies of the software. As for turning in these people, I think that would be getting to "Big Brother" for me, it's just my opinion. I really don't want to start a debate with this, and I respect PCMech policies when it comes to this kind of subject.

I must say i agree with you. I think serial # checking is perfectly ok. Piracy does lead to higher software prices, although i doubt m$ would lower their prices if piracy were wiped out.

The more pirates that get busted, the more computers I'll sell. My sales are low b/c of unethical competitors who install pirated sw in the computers they sell, thus they can sell them 100 bucks cheaper then mine.

Very unethical, but that would mean that pirate users can install SP3 but just have to avoid the windows update utility since that is the only time it checks.

the sad thing is, the more companies spend on trying to thwart pirates....the better (hackers) pirates get. seems to me the hackers should be employed at these big corporations......

And another sad thing is that we legal users are who end up paying the extra money those companies spend on anti-piracy programing, when we buy the finished product.

I think that old software should be given to the people, like games we cant buy. However, if I cant buy the game anymore it is probbabl old enough I don't really care about it anymore...
I hope it will be possible to stop piracy. Logan

Well, there are jewels among abandoned software Logan. I've been searching hard for games I've not been able to find. The one I found, Bad Mojo, was priced at 50 bucks in a store in my city. No way I'm paying that ammount for a '95 game. But still, I don't like pirated copies, so I'm still looking for an original.

Now, legally, how would such evidence withhold in court?
The judicial system, being convoluted as it is, is difficult to interpret; thus the need for an entire occupation to determine what the legislature is trying to say. But, everyone claims such things, even smaller trivial things, to be an invasion of privacy. So, can they use evidence or information unknowingly harvested by a private corporation through its products? Go to Linux. :) Respectfully, Demosthenes |

Let's say I have a hypothetical situation where me and my friend are both running off of my OEM Win 98 SE copy. I, however, have gotten the UPGRADE to XP. Would it record us? Also, what is the penalty for having the pirated software?

They know the pirated wpa codes and whatnot, and various other things. Far be it from me to tell anyone how to run their own company or make their product, folks who accept their terms have done just that, accepted...
But, all this makes me feel that my home is not really mine, it belongs to the carpenter who built it still, and my food to the farmer who grew it, my truck to ford, etc.... Personally I think it is highly unnatural, and repulsive. |

I think there are pirates because software prices are so high,if Windows was only 5 bucks, there would not be any pirates. Why would there be,it's to much hassle to get around legal things, pirates would just buy the software. |
