Question Incomplete defragmenting

WHEN I DEFRAG C DRIVE, I CANNOT DEFRAG PAST 18% OF COMPLETE. I DEFRAG IN SAFE MODE AND I STILL CAN'T GET PAST 18%. I WAS TOLD THAT ANOTHER PROGRAM MAY BE WRITING TO MY DRIVE WHEN I AM DEFRAGING. HOW DO I FIND WHICH PROGRAM THAT IS WRITING TO MY HARD DRIVE, AND HOW CAN I STOP IT?

should be able to hit Alt-Control-Delete to bring up a window of programs that are running... and then you can shut down programs from that window...pretty much have to close down everything in your taskbar... i also shut off the screensaver and any anti-virus programs... check micro$ofts website also for tips

once you learn how, the rest is easssssssy.. usually.

Good Luck

Hi larscot,

Run Scandisk and Defrag from Safe Mode. Nothing will interfere with the utilities that way.

Reboot your computer and hold the Shift key until Safe Mode loads.

If you can't get past 18% in safe mode, either the drive is seriously fragmented or the drive has a problem. Run a thorough scandisk or run the hard drive manufacturer's utility and see what it comes up with.

By the way, please do not post in ALL CAPS, that's considered shouting.

Also if you are running Win98 try using the Win ME defrag utility as it as way faster.
