I'll be sticking to 2.8, I've read about way too many problems with 3.0.

Me too. I like the simplicity of it and the extensive amount of plug-ins and skins available. I do not like music players that skin into circles and blobs all over the screen. Keep things square and in a format that I am used to. But, that's just my opinion.

I wish I could get excited, but they lost me to Musicmatch last year.

Carl - I bought a CD burner last year that came with MMJB Plus - at the time I was running NT and Winamp was crashing right and left so I installed it and liked it - and haven't looked back.

I could never tell the difference between any WinAmp release. They all sound the same to me, and I care more about function than form, so the skins are silly to me.

Aside from cosmetics (skins, visualizations, menus), what, if any, changes are there between WinAmp releases?

Respectfully,

Demosthenes

You can see all the changes here, many are non-cosmetic.

http://www.winamp.com/download/features2x.jhtml

One of the bigger changes to Winamp 3 is the addition of the Media Library to help organize files.

The only thing I didnt like about WinAmp is that the EQ had no effect when playing CD's, I was using version 2.6
Sonique is also a pretty good program, lets you control the pitch of MP3's
Musicmatch & Cowen jet audio are also good.

I was wondering if everyone could post links to all the high quality, free (and spyware free) music players they know of so I could check them out?

thanks.

Well, I didn't like any of those players except MusicMatch (already tried it years ago), but I never keep MM because the full version is $20 and I am not sure it is worth it, the free version is okay, but the whole thing should be free.

WA3 has quite a few flaws, I have found.

Sooo, I guess Winamp2.8 is still the best mp3 player, and WindowsMP is still the best video file player(not DVD's though).

Can't wait for WA3 to get it's bugs shaken out, it will probably be the best of both worlds then.

I use MMJB 7.1 Plus with the DFX plugin and WMP 6.4, that handles everything I need.

Something to be said about a small simple program that still does alot. Always kind of thought that MM was a little big and bulky. You can also try Real Jutebox/Player or Quicktime, but I dont think those programs are as good as the ones mentioned before. If you want something to play DVD's then get Power DVD.

BE careful with winamp 3. It has spyware loaded into it, so make sure you run a utility such as adaware after you install. Just a heads up.

haha, there is no spyware in it.

it has the option to report anonymous usage statistics like it always has, no personal info is given. It is basically to improve the condition of the product.

There is also a new option to look up the song you are listening to using CDDB, but that is easily disabled in preferences with a simple checkmark.

Also, as with 2.xx, it has the ability to look for newer versions of Winamp at startup, also easily unchecked in Preferences.

There is no spyware. But it does install anoying AOL icons, since Nullsoft was bought by AOL. but no AOL software itself, is installed. I guess the condition of Winamp3 is due to AOL's corproate policies. They wanted a version of Winamp3 out now, instead of waiting for it to be a lot more polished and finished.

Stupid AOL, they are one of the worst companies ever. If anyone has any more questions they should go to the Winamp Forums and check out what's going on.

Tried it, and 20minutes later got rid of it and went back to 2.80. Winamp3 can also play videos, but for me WMP 6.4 did a better job at that. Also it reported the length of an mp3 incorrectly, while it worked fine with 2.8. At this point Winamp3 is too buggy for me.

HEY!!! Flopster!!! I thought you left -- then again, I thought I left.

I guess everyone needs a place where everybody knows you name.....at least every now and then.

Good to see you back.
