Utilities

I've been surfing Simtel.net & download.com for different utilites, mainly for popup killers, download accelerators, spyware detectors, registry cleaners, etc. There are so many that I thought I'd post this to get you guys' feedback on which ones you would/wouldn't recommend... any recommendations greatly appreciated!

I use Pop-Up Stopper that I downloaded on www.cnet.com . I have noticed a definite drop in pop ups after installing this program. It just runs in the backround and has no adds or anything. I set it to just start up when I boot up. Its the best thing in my systray.

As for spyware detectors, Ad-Aware is the best one you can get in my opinion. It can be downloaded here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ . Its an excellent program that finds lots of spyware and is easy to use. I would definetly recommend it.

Those are the two utilities I use the most. The download accelerators wont increase your download speeds, but it is useful for pausing a download so you can come back to it later. This is especially useful if you have dialup. DAP is one I used to use. http://www.speedbit.com/

Just my $.02

I like to use AdSubtract Pro for a popup/ad killer. It isn't free, but you can get it cheaper than just going off and buying it. Download the free version and run it for a month... you'll get an offer at a discounted rate.

AdAware is probably the best for spyware removal.

I wouldn't bother with download accelerators. I find they usually cause more problems than help.

RegCleaner is excellent...I never work on or build a system without installing it. I used to use Pop-Up Stopper, but stopped when I switched from IE to Mozilla. I like AdAware, too, but I find Spybot much better. Learned about Spybot here from morriswingate.

Yeah, Spybot and EasyCleaner are also fine utilities and another one that might be of interest is Mailwasher it blocks spam from your inbox, my wife and I really like this one.

AdSubtractPro, jv16PowerTools, and Cacheman (oh yeah, and Ad-Aware)

jv16 makes RegCleaner also, but jv16PowerTOols contains a more powerful registry cleaner (plus a wealth of other utilities )

= shameless plug, but very true.

AdAware, RegCleaner, XPAntiSpy, MailWasher, and Mozilla (blocks pop-ups and ad servers).

And don't forget Norton AV, ZoneAlarm and Trojan Remover (better and cheaper than The Cleaner).

Another vote for Pop Up Stopper, Mailwasher, Zone Alarm, and Adware.

I use this Free browser , which has a built in pop up stopper . ( don't add , About Blank , to the existing filter list )
Uses very little resources ( No Add's ) & is as good as any other browser .
Intergrates quitely into your system , does not take over . You can still run your normal browser , if you wish .
Uses the IE engine , but is very fast & stable .

10-4 on jv16PowerTools and Spybot s&d. Opera browser is fast, light, and very configurable. No pop-ups, no unwanted cookies, no java, no javascript, no re-directs, no referrers. All are options.
