He should have no problems. It's good ole DOS. What kind of program is it?

The reason I'm asking is that the proggie could run faster on a faster machine. I used to play CD-MAN in my old 486, but when I installed on my new Pentium 133 the game was so wickedly fast that you just couldn't play it!

DOS is DOS and there shouldn't be any problem running it on any speed of machine, 286, 386, 486, AMD XP, P4.. whatever. The program doesn't really care what speed the machine is.

Stick a 3.5" floppy in the 286. If there is too much data then you can use something like a parallel port Zip drive or a direct connect cable and Dos Laplink. You will need the 3.5" floppy in the 286 to install the Iomega Guest or Laplink software anyway. If the hard drive in the 286 is IDE, you can pull it and slave it into the 486 and copy the files off that way.

Don't get your hopes up - Win95 has a hard time with a lot of old Dos programs.

well ithink he loaded the program on successfully but all the labels they havemade are onthe other computer.he estimated it would take ten days to manually copy the data over.so with the direct cable connect is that through the parrallel ports, how much are these cables?do you think direct cable is the easiest way to do this? you use the laplink software with this?he cant attempt to move the data by floppy, they are two different sizes. just looking for the easiest/cheapest way.
thankyou

How many megs of data are we talking about here? A direct parallel cable is about $6 US but Laplink is commercial software and finding an old copy for Dos may be a bit difficult. Norton Commander for Dos also has a link feature and I'm sure there is other old software out there that also will do it.

I'm assuming the 286 only has a 5.25" floppy drive and the 486 only has a 3.5" drive? I'm saying to temporarily (or permanently) install a 3.5" floppy drive in the 286 and "sneakernet" the files over. You could also install a 5.25" floppy drive in the 486.

ive got the 286 and 486 being brought over gonna take a stab at maybe slaving one to the other. the only prob i see is its probably not compatible drives. one being esdi (i think thats what its called) and the other ide.how do i know if its its ide ? will the connecters match if there both ide ..is there 286 with ide .another question is would i be able to remove windows 95 and use the computer at dos level only, if there a prob loading the program.hope you can understand this.
thankyou all for your time

If the MSDOS program cannot run in windows 95 it will ask it you want to run the program in MSDOS mode click yes

If this message does not come up and the proggie wont work in windows the right click on the executable file and click properties==>program==>advanced==>and place a tick next to "MSDOS mode" and untick "suggest MSDOS mode as
nessasary"

MS-DOS programs CAN run under Win95, but you have to do some experimenting. Quite often going to the programs properties, you can check the box off to prevent MS-DOS based programs from detecting Windows.

This doesn't always work, but it can.
