I've heard that an asian programmer developed a proggie for fending off mosquitoes and other insects using your computer speakers. Unfortunately, I've lost the newspaper where I saw it.
Anyone knows about that program? Seems it was available as a free download.

Probably works by causing the speakers to emitt a 140 db + high pitched sound which humans cannot endure, so the human runs away from the computer, mosquitoes go after human.>results=No Mosquitoes around the computer.

ROFL!
Now seriously, it gives off a ultrasonic sound imperceptible for humans but so annoying for mosquitoes that they are unable to fly. |

Yeah an those Ultrasonic pest repellers they sell will keep mice away without harming pets, who have the same hearing range. So if they do not bother pets then they don't bother mice.

When I was in the Navy I remember several contractors testing products similar to what Morris spoke of. I don't remember anything of them working at all. Buy I have seen some that will kill larvae in the water, although it is in a pretty small area.

There's a little problem with computer speakers playing back 'ultrasonic' sound. Most computer speakers have a range of 80Hz - 18KHz. Hardly ultrasonic. Even my studio reference monitors would have issues -- they are rated from 18Hz - 25KHz. Ultrasonic sound would be an octave above human hearing or 40KHz.

You mean my ultrasonic elephant repeller does not work? But, there are no elephants around.
Anyway, Audiyoda beat me to it. I doubt many applications/games use sound which cannot be heard by humans, so it stands to reason that most desktop speakers are not designed to produce sound which cannot be heard by humans. The repeller probably just plays some sound which is completely unbearable to mosquito, like polka. Respectfully, Demosthenes |

maybe it's not through the speakers... maybe he's somehow figured out how to make componant produce the vibrations and repel the bugs...

Maybe it slows your processor to just over 40KHz . . . But no, MS Windows already takes care of that.

Who has problems with them bugs anyway? At least near your computer? Only time I have them, is when I am working hard outside, and sweating. I swear those bugs can see me a mile away......hehe....

Hmmm, I have noticed that TV's emit a very high pitched sound that I find annoying. Lots of times I'll come home and find that my husband has turned off the cable box, but not the TV, leaving the TV with a blank black screen. I know instantly if the TV is on or not, because I can hear it. He obviously cannot. Maybe the guy made some program that's gonna make your monitor emit the sound. Audiyoda?

The artifacts are in octaves -- 60 - 120 - 240 - 480 - 960 - 1.9K - 3.8K - 7.7K - 15.3k 30.7K..... But most of the sound you would hear are out of phase of each other -- another part of artifacts. But there are some frequencies that are not out of phase or just barely out of phase -- they are in the upper band around 25-28K. -Craig |
