Choosing an OS
Which, of the following, is the best Windows OS? Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, or Windows XP Home?

I've never had any issues with the OS's you listed, but XP Home get's my vote too.

I hate ME with a passion. Nothing but problems on my wife's VAIO.
Since Win2000 isn't on the list, WinXP would get my vote as well. -Craig |

ditto on teh XPHome.
Though I hear 2000 is good too. Just forget about 98 and ME. (98SE is ok, and some people never had prob's with ME, but ME gave me all kinds of stress) |

I'm not an XP fan - I prefer 2000. 98SE isnt bad at all - but I do not like ME. If I were forced to use XP, I would get Pro, not Home.

Try to forget ME. I am a real 98 Fan and after using XP I am seeing the light on it, w/ some reservations. But Pro not home.

Is there a problem with Home? I'm asking because I'm about to buy it this week.

I would go with XP Home from the list mentioned, but I rather go with 2000 PRO or XP PRO.

Yes, you just have to turn off simple file sharing that is on by default with the PRO version.

Well it seems everyones loves the lastest and greatest "XP"
I have win98 on one HD and Xp on another. Right now I'm using win98 Xp is unstable on my comp, to many reboots, win32errors, I have programs stop responding for no reason, then I try to reinstall I get a win32 error mess So I'm building a new comp for Xp this old K6-2-350 4.3 gig 256 ram is not enough machine for xp but for now win98 gets my vote |

I like 98SE, only real problem I had with it, was that after a while...the system resources would run out, and Windows would get slower and slower. Otherwise its a great OS. I have 2000 Pro now, and like glc said, its like night and day. Both are great however...XP is new...and I wouldn't even touch it until its at least a year old (well, played on 95 and 98 too much here) and they have service packs with them. This is just my point of view however. If the rest of the guys say XP is perfect, get it then.

Another vote for Windows 2000 or XP. Forget about Windows 98/ME, their time is over.

WinXP gets my vote too.
However if you have a lower end system then I would maybe think about putting win98_SE on it. By lower end I mean a CPU that's 350Mhz or slower, 64MB RAM or less. |

One last thing. Even though XP runs great on my system and I think it's the best OS for a PC that's out there, it doesnt run like that right after it's installed. There are some things that need to be done to it in order to get it to run good. Like turning off system restore and auto updates. Maybe running a program like 'XP anti-spy'

best of all
Dual boot. Theres a nifty program called System Command 7.04 which will allow you to use multiple OS's. I am going to configure Win 98 SE and XP on my system. I've been playing with XP and I do like it very much, but I have some older apps. that won't run on XP, so i simply boot to 98se-end of probs. Check out System Command athttp://vcom.com

You don't need System Commander to dual boot 98 and XP - just install 98 first then install XP on another partition and XP's boot menu will allow you to dual boot.

XP is nice, running it dual boot with ME at work & home. Nothing wrong with ME for me, 17 PC with ME at work and never any problems. (All Intel 815ep chipsets though) Kid and wife share PC 2x 40 gig Seagates, also dual boot, one with XP and the other ME for games. Running 14 of the latest games, no problems with any game.

It depends on the hardware you are looking at.
My deal goes like this: if it uses sdram, and is say 1gig or less in cpu speed, use 98/ME (nothing wrong with ME as far as I am concerned, and I always turn off system rollback and other 2k fakery). If it uses ddr or rdram, and is a gig or faster cpu, use XP or 2k. If you do not care how fast the system is, and desire the stability of XP/2k, go ahead and install it on anything. All my boxes run on XP Home, XP Pro, or 2000. But, Redmond/Lycoris Linux is my fav of all, and will run on most anything. If you look for yourself, you will see that Linux is not only fun to run, but is way ahead in certain things than any windows. If it only played the games...... Someday it will.

Well.....I have 2K on my P3-800 with 512 megs PC100 sdram and it runs real sweet. My P233MMX laptop with 64 megs EDO dual boots 98SE and 2K very well, but 2K is, shall we say, leisurely in performance. My 486DX4/75 laptop with 20 megs ram is running 95B.
Bottom line - and this is only my *opinion*, folks: Original 95 is very fast on slow machines, but it only has FAT16 support and is a nightmare without SP1 (to make it 95A) and several other patches. 95B is quite stable and very desirable for 486-class machines and slow Pentiums - as long as you keep IE4+ off it. 95C is a dog because IE4 and the active desktop destabilizes the 95 kernel severely. 98FE suffers from a lot of the same problems as 95C. 98SE is probably the best of the 9x-based systems. I have no use for ME, I hate it, I have no use for it whatsoever. Its only saving grace is System Restore. NT4 Workstation is stable as a rock, but too long in the tooth and "plug and play" is not in its vocabulary at ALL. 2000 Pro is just outstanding in my book and I believe that it's the best overall OS that Micro$oft ever made. XP has too many issues for me, it has the *potential* to be a great OS, but in practice I do not like it. |
