Hey Folks,
I have a large .avi file (800mb video) that i can't fit on one CD. Is there a way to burn half the file on one CD and continue on a second CD? I have Nero 5.5 software. Any help would be great. I need to burn this video as its taking up room on my HD. I only have 4gb.

Get VideoDub -- it can split the file for you and it's freeware.

O.K. I found that one. Now, by splitting do you mean segmenting? I tried that and it was going to take like 10 hrs. So I aborted. These are the filters I used: Video Compression- Indeo Video 5.10 Audio Compression- Creative ADPCM Frame decimation (2frames) 85% Quality Forced keyframe every 50 Full Processing mode Save Segmented AVI Is this right? If so, should it take 10 hrs? Or is there a faster way? Thanks, Ray |

Video compression needs to be the same as the original AVI is, otherwise VirtualVob converts the video, which takes that time and decreases quality.
What kind of AVI is it ? RJ |

AHHH!
The original Compression is DivX5. So if I use that compression about how long should it take to segment? What kind of AVI? Amature video from family. If thats what you mean. Ray |

Hi lovesranch,
Getting in late here... Did you try a regular compression for the file, like Zip(ing) it? It's so close to fitting, it just might do the trick... HTH TwoRails |

If any compression format is going to help, it will be ACE compression -- seems to do the best at multimedia files. But considering it's a DivX5 AVI, I doubt there's much any compression utility can do -- DivX5 uses extreme compression as it is.
lovesranch -- as long as you match your settings in Virtualdub to what exists in your video file, the time to cut the file should be relatively short. But you still might want to allow Virtualdub to do it over night. -Craig |

Thanks TwoRails and audiyoda,
I will try it with the existing settings and if that doesn't do it, maybe the zip. Will let you know results. |

Another possibility would be to use 800 MB CD-Rs, providing that your burner can burn them (burner and burning application need to support overburning).

Hey guys,
I got it segmented and it only took 5 min! Used existing settings and saved AVI segmented. Now for the next problem When I burned it, Nero had to encode it to make it VCD? It took 4.5 hrs for that and about 7 min to burn. Is there any way to speed up the encoding process? If not, I guess I could live with that. At least I got it split up and can get it off my HD. Ray |

Well the VCD is based on MPEG-1 encoding -- if I had known that's what you wanted to do I would have suggested using TMPGEnc to encode the AVI to MPG-1 and then burn from there.

So then why did you use DivX ? That wasn't a good idea as you encoded the material twice. Just forget about DivX, and encode your footage directly to MPEG-1 (VCD) or MPEG-2 (SVCD, DVD).
Another tip: Don't let Nero encode, the results will be bad. TMPGEnc is the best choice for this. Yet another tip: Don't use Nero for (S)VCD/DVD burning, it can't do that correct. For (S)VCD better use VCDEasy (www.vcdeasy.org). It does the job better than Nero, is easy to use, and freeware ![]() RJ Last edited by RJ; 09-03-2002 at 12:54 AM. |

Hey Guys,
Sorry I bugged out! I was helping a friend evacuate his horses from the Leona Valley fire scene. Anyway, sorry if some of my choices for this compressing/encoding thing are dumb. I'm a newbie to this stuff. Craig, what is "TMPGEnc"? Is that software? Virtualdub doesn't give me that option that I could find. RJ, I've got vcdeasy so I'll burn with that as soon as I can encode to MPEG-1

TMPGEnc is a program that will encode video to a MPEG-1 stream (for VCD encoding) or MPEG-2 stream (for SVCD encoding).
Your best bet is to check www.vcdhelp.com -- they are a great recource for creation of VCD's. -Craig |
