I have recently purchased a 56K internal modem, strictly for fax and answering machine purposes. The software that came with it, Communicate Lite, I'm not real happy with. All I'm looking for is suggestions on software that is simple and reliable. That will receive faxes even from the older fax machines, and will automatically detect a fax or voice call. I don't need prompt for extensions or any other office type options. I would prefer it didn't drop calls in the middle of recording. I would like to be able to just do fax and answering plainly and simply and reliably. Heck, I'd even pay for it! I'm not dim, and I've had good software before, but I've been away from it for awhile. Any advice will be well taken.
Thanks, Cork |

IMO Symantecs Winfax Pro is about the best FAX sofware around.

I agree with Winfax Pro - but it won't act as an answering machine and the current version is really quite a bloated pig. What you might want to do is look in used/discontinued software stores for Winfax Pro 8.0 (the last reasonably trim version) along with "TalkWorks" - that's the telephony software that works in conjunction with Winfax to turn your modem into an answering machine in addition to a fax. TalkWorks is no longer offered by Symantec. The only issue is going to be compatibility with your modem - as both packages work fine with 98SE.

Thanks Rick and glc, sounds like a good place to start. I'll see what I can get done tomorrow. Got to get the football sheets rolling as smooth as possible. Thanks again.

WinFax is a great program. GLC is right that it has grown incredibly over the years. I use the newest version only because it is the only one that works with XP according to Symantec. But before I knew that I had 10.0 installed and it seemed to work fine. I wouldn't suggest anything newer 8 or 9 if you are not familar with it. You almost need to go to school to learn 10.0 .
If you just want basic fax capabilities use Microsoft Fax. It's on the 98 first edition CD. You can find it under "old 95" or something similar. |

Thanks for the info. I'm wanting answering machine capabilities too. Unfortunately, the next couple of days will be too busy to check things out. But thanks all for your help!
