The iPod is probably the best portable MP3 player, but it's currently Mac-only, so look at the Creative Nomad or the Archos Jukebox Recorder as well.

A second vote for the Creative Nomad Jukebox3, and the Apple IPod, when it goes to PC. Another option to look at is the Sonicblue Rio Volt SP250. It doesnt have the large capacity like the other two, but it is a great player with a much cheaper price.
