If you have recently formatted and reinstalled Windows, or gotten a new machine, you have to re-enter the registration code that was given to you when you initially registered. There are 3 variables - the CD install key, the program serial number, and the registration code. They all have to match. If it doesn't like the 3rd item and you have the first 2, you have to re-register. Call the Intuit registration phone number and explain the situation, they will give you a valid code.

Look in the menus for "register Quickbooks".

i can't go to "register Quickbooks" because the key problem occurs during the starts and forces me to exit.

That probably means that you have used it 25 times without registering - you are probably going to have to call them.

If you own the software (license), no matter how old, I would think they would at least help you with a registration issue.

As I remember - when you install 6.0, you have to enter the CD key. The first time you run the program, it opens a wizard to set up a new company or open an existing company. Easiest thing to do is open the sample company. Then, the next time you open the program it presents you with a screen telling you that you have 24 uses left before you have to register, and registration instructions are on the screen - and it CAN be done over the Internet without a phone call. If it did not do this for you, something is wrong.
