MS Word v Norton AV
Hi
I'm running Windows 2000. I have developed a persistent problem with Word 2000 (and occasionally other office products). Word can be choosy about starting, flashing up an error message while loading & hanging while debugging & finally closing. If it is persuaded to start, by loading an innocuous previously created doc, it then works fine, creating new docs & loading what it would not load from scratch. I have reinstalled office 2000, but the problem is with Norton; once I switch off the office plug in, it seems to work ok. Should i leave it as it is? Or re-install Norton AV? Or what? Help much appreciated.

I would look at repairing the MS Office installation. The repair function will be available when you put the Office disk in the drive. I have never had any problems with NOrton AV and Office, or for that fact with any major software. Your problem may actually be caused by shareware/freeware or file sharing progrmas such as Kazaa. Also suggest that you do a virus scan on your computer.

Hi
Thanks for the ideas. Office install is now new. problem came up straightaway. I've run adaware to remove any lurking progs, nothing to report. Scheduled scan came up blank. I don't know why the problem has occured but it is definitely the Office/scan interface, more specifically word/scan. So it could be a word virus i suppose but Norton doesn't report it. |

Did you get any warning boxes during the Office re-Install?
You could also re-install office with all the backgound Norton Tasks shutdown. I have never had these problems with Norton, but Mcaffee anti-virus has problems with the office installer. (Of course Mcaffee has trouble with a lot of programs) |

I suppose i could try that - a bit of a bore, especially as it my office 2000 is an upgrade so i have to reinstall 97 if i'm doing it from scratch.
Am i losing much by switching off the virus scan? I don't use many docs create elsewhere. |

You don't have to go through all of that. Get the error message you are receiving and search for it on Symantecs site. There are usually simple fixes for these conflicts. Word's macro functions and antivirus software often times don't get along well. They are easy problems to solve.

I've been to the Symantec site and found a problem where Word stops responding when Nav 2000 or 2001 is being used. They suggest disabling the plug-in, saying it does not affect virus protection.
So this seems the simplest answer, even if my problem is a bit different (failure to open properly at all). |
