Unhappy The DVD, again ....

I tried to play The Royal Tenenbaums and had the following fun.
The ATI MMC returned " DVD copy protection initialization failed. Play back is canceled."
WIN DVD started very nicely and then froze with the following message " WIN DVD caused an invalid page fault in module MFC 42 DLL at 018f:5f4012aL and will now close. "
What is the problem here? As of last week both Blade 2 and The Fellowship of the Ring played with no trouble.
System file checker shows no problem so what am I missing?

If you are using Win XP there is an update at Windows Update for DVD copyright protection issues. WinDVD may have a patch as well depending on the version you are running.

I have removed and reinstalled ATI drivers and the DVD player and multimedia center. Everything is up to date as is the DirectX 8.1B. I have down loaded and installed the trial version of intervideo WinDVD 4. I have tried Interactual, which always does it's best to hog DVD playing.
Why won't this DVD work ?
Is it me or the disk ?
Has someone come up with some new and nasty form of copy protection I don't know about?

It may be the disk, I rented The Royal Tenebaums when it first released and it played fine on my 1.4 T-bird with Power DVD.

I think you're right.
It's due back at lunch tomorrow and I'll exchange it for another.
Thanks for the necessary reminder. Not all errors are the operator's.

It’s strange I have rented some DVD’s that looked so perfect, I would think oh yeah they’ll play just fine and then find that I couldn’t get them to play on four different DVD players, then I get one that is scratched up so bad you’d think it would never play and it does… go figure.
