Nero-good or not?
Hello,
I received an OEM copy of Nero with my burner. I have visited the site and it seems like a pretty good system, but the instructions are translated from German and make no sense.(?) Anybody have an opinion on it's user friendlyness or a link to some sites for some explanation of how to use the software. Thanks

It's very good software, but can be intimidating at first. It isn't particularly very "user-friendly".

The best thing to do is download the latest update (5.5.9.9) which will update your OEM copy. Then you can use the "Nero Express" interface, which is a very user friendly wizard.

I love it...it only seems intimidating to people who have gotten used to Easy CD Creator.

I love Nero. I bought it after I put my build together. I had high hopes, paying $70 for it and I wasnt dissapointed. It is an excellent program, with tons of options. I agree it does seem intimidating but its simpler than it looks.
Use the Nero Express after you upgrade to the latest version. This streamlines the burning process, very simple for new users.

As GLC said, the newest version (since 5.5.9.6) comes with Nero Express. This is an absolutely great program for the novice. As you become more familiar with the burning software, you will decide to look at the full version and the learning curve will be small.

Hello,
Good to hear positive responces for Nero, the guy at the local store swayed my choice of equally priced, but 1 a bit slower writer with Nero and the other, a bit quicker writer, without. I opted for Nero, obviously. Will revisit site and get the update. Thanks all, I suspected there was (per usual) an answer out there! |

I also had an OEM version of NERO, I wasn't too impressed, and I'm sure that could result from my being used to ROXIO, however, today I did try to burn an ISO file for a Linux Mandrake ISO I downloaded, and I figured, ok I'm sure it will have it, and sure enough it didn't have it, they have their own .nps (or something similar) either way I wasn't too impressed in general and it may just be an old version. I personally just am getting slightly irritated in general with burning software, it seems you have to buy new burning software for the latest version of micro$haft, then deal with more problems. I just wasn't impressed, it had the features most other burning software I've seen has, except that ISO thing (which was irritating this morning to find free software that supported ISOs).

That's strange - in Nero, hit File, then Burn Image - iso is one of the choices.

I've had / have both the OEM version and "retail" version. I've found no difference between the two. That's not to say that maybe some burners come with a stripped down version, but all 4 TDK VeloCDs I've bought came with the full version of Nero ... Anybody every notice a stripped down OEM version of Nero?? TwoRails |

Hello,
I downloaded the "express" and the update for "in-cd". Also found more detailed versions of instructions. I have the basic mechanics of it I believe. Though the express makes it even simpler than the wizards. Not to overly digress, but what the heck does in-cd really do? It claims to make rw-cds perform like floppies, but I haven't yet made it do that, and once one does, does it only work on rw drives?? Just curious. Thanks Last edited by Needtoknow; 09-28-2002 at 10:26 PM. |

InCD allows you to format RW's for "packet writing" which makes it behave like a giant floppy. It can be read in any RW drive - and it can be read in systems with no RW if you install UDF reader software on it. It's a small free download from the Nero site.

No, you only need to install the UDF reader on other computers that don't have InCD or DirectCD installed already to read your formatted RW's. Your computer can read the RW's in either the burner or the CD drive as long as InCD is installed. Only your burner can write to the formatted RW.
If you are a newbie to CD burning, I would recommend that you get familiar with using Nero Express to burn standard CDR's first before experimenting with packet writing RW's. DirectCD and InCD can be a pain in the neck. I seldom use it, with CDR's being so cheap I can't see a real advantage to using RW's any more. You can make "multisession" CDR's so you can write to them till they are full anyway. You can also "burn" CDRW's using Nero and erase them later anyway - the only advantage to formatting them is the ability to write to them using anything - Windows Explorer drag and drop, etc. |

Ah,
Instead of being in Nero, per se. Now I get the ease part of it , but will stick to the basics and cdr's for now. Keep it simple holds true again. Thanks. |

well, I do admit I was wrong, Nero does appear to be just as good as any other burner, as I did find the iso part of it. I had come up with a problem with burning an ISO and when I selected burn image it only at first listed .nrg or something similar, anyway after selecting any file *.* it was able to do so. The only gripe I had was that it was not even mentioned in the help section (As I did check there also). So in conclussion, it's as good as any other cd burning software, as they all have most of the same features anyway. ....
.... And, I was wrong

Out of the many pieces of buring software I've tried, I've found that Nero works the best.

Out of ALL the burning progs I've used. Nero is the geek tool, EZCD is the bloatware, all others fall inbetween somewhere, and Sony Extreme is the easiest. This excludes CloneCD, which is another excellent geek tool.
The only 2 that I still use are Nero and CloneCD. Quote:

I have to try CloneCD. I still use Roxio, but only because of my large base of CD RWs written in the DirectCD format. The last version of InCD was not compatable. No biggie as one of them would have to run, anyway. CloneCD, hopefully, will work on the very few CDs that choke Nero.

I wouldn't trade Nero for anything else I have seen. My kids use Iomega Hotburn. You can't do much with it but there is nothing to mess up either.

That it's the best seems to be the word here. I just got it, and haven't had the chance to use it....so, I'll let you know what I think.

It is the best besides maybe XCDRoast, a Linux product. I would never give it to the clueless computer user (CCU). Give them Roxio or let them use XP's built-in. It is not as easy to figure out as Roxio. CloneCD is great too but it is a specialized product for copying CD's. It bypasses a lot of the copyright protection on the CD.

Hello Kassia,
Download the "Nero Express " update from the website if you don't already have it, as mentioned above. It makes the whole getting aquainted period a breeze. |
