Clone Software with a Twist
Hi all,
Anyone know of a good drive cloning program that will work from Win2K and will clone to an EXternal (USB) drive. Nero and NTI seem to only work to CD-burners, and Ghost, which works excellently for internal drives, won't clone to an external USB HDD. It used to in Win98, but because Ghost must run from DOS... Anyway, I have two internal HDD's but I want to clone my main Win2K partition to my external. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. |

Powerquest has nothing that will clone or image to a USB device.

It's funny. Didn't even think of Drive Image, even though I own it. I knew that wouldn't work, but I guess you confirmed that Drive Copy wouldn't either.
Any ideas, anyone? My only option seems to be creating a Win98 partition and Ghosting from there. |

Ghost 2003,
Can Clone to USB1.1, USB 2 & Firewire external devices. Can also clone using a USB file transfer cable. I did this yesterday (slow though 32 MB per second) |

Ghost 2003 can be run from within windows. It auto reboots, goes to dos, does it's thing, reboots, back to windows.
FROM THE HELP FILES: Norton Ghost usually installs USB and Firewire drivers in the Virtual Partition if it finds a USB or Firewire external device. You may need to install these drivers manually as a default option or while running a Windows wizard task. Note: Do not use this option if you want to connect to another computer using peer-to-peer 1. Do one of the following: o To set the default installation of external drivers, in the Ghost Basic window, click Options. o To install the external device drivers while running a Windows wizard task, in the Advanced settings window, click Advanced Settings. 2. On the External Storage tab, select one of the following: o No USB Drivers: Does not install USB drivers o USB 1.1 Drivers: Installs USB 1.1 drivers Select this option if any of your cards or chipsets are USB 1.1. o USB 2.0 Drivers: Installs USB 2.0 drivers Do not select this option if any of your cards or chipsets are USB 1.1. 3. If you want to install Firewire drivers to the Virtual Partition, then click Firewire Support. 4. If you want to assign a drive letter to the external storage devices, then click Assign drive letters. By default, a drive letter is assigned to an external storage device. This option assigns a drive letter to USB and Firewire devices in DOS. 5. Click OK. |

Thanks much, casey. This is what I love about this place; I ask a question, and a few hours later get a simple and accurate answer.

Hi there,
CORRECTION !!! 32 meg per second should read 32meg per minute. ! was still asleep when reading your post. "Can also clone using a USB file transfer cable" I actually made and image using a USB file transfer cable took 30 minutes for 680meg. Also did the same image with peer to peer "CAT5" which took 2 minutes. |
